Acidic Buffer (Henderson-Hasselbalch)

Rarely Tested

$$\text{pH} = \text{p}K_a + \log_{10}\left(\frac{[\text{Salt}]}{[\text{Acid}]}\right)$$

Concept: Calculates the pH of an acidic buffer solution containing a weak acid and its conjugate base.

Notation:

  • $$\text{pH}$$ = Potential of hydrogen;
  • $$\text{p}K_a$$ = $$-\log_{10}K_a$$;
  • $$[\text{Salt}]$$ = Molar concentration of salt;
  • $$[\text{Acid}]$$ = Molar concentration of weak acid.
