Total Vapour Pressure (Ideal)

Rarely Tested

$$P_{\text{total}} = P^\circ_A \cdot x_A + P^\circ_B \cdot x_B$$

Concept: Calculates the total vapour pressure of an ideal solution where adhesive forces ($$\text{A-B}$$) are identical to cohesive forces ($$\text{A-A}$$ and $$\text{B-B}$$).

Notation:

  • $$P_{\text{total}}$$ = Total vapour pressure of the mixture;
  • $$P^\circ_A, P^\circ_B$$ = Vapour pressures of pure components A and B;
  • $$x_A, x_B$$ = Mole fractions of components A and B in liquid phase.
