Henry's Law (Gas in Liquid)

Rarely Tested

$$p = K_H \cdot x$$

Concept: States that the partial pressure of a gas in the vapour phase is directly proportional to the mole fraction of the gas dissolved in the liquid medium.

Notation:

  • $$p$$ = Partial pressure of the gas;
  • $$K_H$$ = Henry's law constant;
  • $$x$$ = Mole fraction of the gas in the liquid phase.
Alternate form

$$m = K'_H \cdot p$$

Concept: Relates the total mass of a gas dissolved per unit volume of a solvent directly to the partial pressure of that gas under equilibrium conditions.

Notation:

  • $$m$$ = Mass of the dissolved gas;
  • $$K'_H$$ = Alternative Henry's law constant.
