Depression of Freezing Point ($$\Delta T_f$$)

Rarely Tested

$$\Delta T_f = i \cdot K_f \cdot m$$

Concept: A colligative property - Calculates the decrease in the freezing point of a solvent upon the addition of a non-volatile solute.

Notation:

  • $$\Delta T_f$$ = Depression of freezing point ($$T_f^\circ - T_f$$);
  • $$i$$ = van 't Hoff factor;
  • $$K_f$$ = Molal depression constant (Cryoscopic constant);
  • $$m$$ = Molality of solution.
