Here's your 10th grade at 93.5%, 12th at 88.3%, and 7.1 CGPA in undergrad with SC category and no work experience. So you have a pretty good chance since you’ve got a fairly strong 10th and 12th grade profile. Your academic profile is strong, a bit lower in undergrad with 7.1, but at least you’ve crossed the 7.0 barrier, which is great because it’s much better than falling below 7.0, which is like a fail point. So overall, you have a solid profile. Being in the SC category helps. Not having work experience might slightly hurt, but not by much. So if you are targeting BLACKI, I think you can get BLACKI given your academic profile with 97 percentile plus, and also with 96-95 percentile plus. Maybe I am overestimating here, but to actually convert the calls, I also think 97 percentile would be a good target. That would ensure you not only get shortlisted but also convert them.

89.6 in 10th grade, 76.8 in 12th, 99.2 in undergrad, and three years of work experience. But he left his job. See, those three years of work experience still count even if you quit the job. That’s fine because, first off, after three years of work experience, having a gap year doesn’t hurt your chances much in an interview. And second, with 36 months of work experience, you’re at the top level when it comes to scoring on that part of your profile. So overall, this is a good profile.

The only weak point I noticed is the slightly lower marks in 12th grade. I don’t think that will hurt that much. I feel like you have a pretty good chance with IIM AIK, but since you’re a GEM, you’ll still need around 99 points. I think with three years of work experience, 99.7 plus will probably be needed. Also, for new items, I think still around 99 plus will be necessary. With GEM, I think it’s a bit tough, but three years of work experience will help. Your undergrad score will also help quite a bit in converting the interview calls, especially since a 9.2 undergrad score is a very good score. Convince the interview panel that you’re a serious and good student, and that will really help a lot.

General category, 10th - 88.8%, 12th - 78%. BSc Agriculture - 7.9%. For FABM in IIMA, okay, so you're interested in FABM and IIMA. I'd say, given your background in BSc Agriculture, you have a pretty good profile for FABM. Your 12th is a bit on the lower side but it’s not a big weakness. For general category, I'd say around 97% would be enough for FABM. Generally, anything around 90-95% is good enough for FABM. You have a fairly decent profile, so there’s a good chance of getting a good conversion too.

CAT Profile Review 4

10th84%

UG69%

Your profile looks quite decent overall. Your 10th-grade score of 84% is good since anything above 80% is generally considered strong. Your 12th-grade marks, around 69%, are a bit low as ideally, they should be 70% or above, but it’s not a major setback. Your graduation score of 69% is acceptable, especially for an LLB degree, where many candidates often have lower scores. Being from the OBC category gives you some advantage with respect to cutoffs, which works in your favor. Also, since you are a non-engineer, you gain some academic diversity points, which helps your profile. Your work experience of 18 months as a partner in an LLP firm, which you will complete by January 2025, is definitely a positive.

The organization you work for matters less than the fact that you are actively working. Overall, your strengths lie in your good 10th score, non-engineer background, OBC category, and ongoing work experience. Since your 12th-grade marks cannot be changed, it’s best not to worry about them and instead focus on preparing well for the CAT. If you aim to score around the 98th percentile or higher, you should get calls from most good institutes including BLACKI IIMs. So, concentrate on your CAT preparation and leverage the strengths in your profile for a solid chance at selection.

CAT Profile Review 5

UG7.8 CGPA

Your profile has some good points. Your 10th-grade score is 84.8%, which is above 80% and definitely a positive. Your 12th-grade percentage is 79.5%, which is slightly unfortunate because if it were above 80%, you’d be in a stronger bracket, but 79.5% is still an acceptable score. Another positive is your BCom CGPA of 7.8, which is good by BCom standards. Being a non-engineer also adds value to your profile. However, the gap year you’ve taken is a concern. I generally do not recommend having a gap because it means you won’t earn any points for work experience. Work experience adds significant value to your profile, and if you work for one or two years, you’ll gain important points in that area. So, having a gap at this stage is not ideal. Overall, your profile is good, but you’ll need to focus heavily on your CAT preparation and aim to score very well to maximize your chances for top B schools.

You mentioned your 10th percentage is 67.8%, your 12th percentage is 77.8%, and you’re currently pursuing a BA through distance education with about a 60 percentage so far. You asked if you can get into IIM ABC and also wanted advice on profile and CV building, and whether to start CAT preparation.

Here’s my honest opinion. Your 10th percentage of 67.8% is not ideal — ideally, I’d like to see above 80% in 10th for a stronger profile. Your 12th percentage of 77.8% is decent — not great, but certainly not bad. Since your BA is still in progress, my first advice is to focus on improving your graduation score as much as possible. Right now, this is your last chance to improve your academic profile because you cannot go back and change your 10th or 12th marks. If you are currently around 59 or 58 percentage in your BA, aim to push that above 60, as many colleges have a minimum graduation cutoff of 60%.

Regarding profile and CV building, if you’re aiming for a two-year MBA program at an Indian institute, your profile or CV doesn’t matter much for getting shortlisted through CAT. Whether you have extracurricular activities or not won’t affect your shortlist chances. These extracurriculars become relevant only at the interview stage, where you can showcase that you are a well-rounded candidate. If you have done internships or participated in notable activities, those are good points to bring up in interviews, but they don’t help you get shortlisted.

So right now, don’t worry too much about CV building. Instead, focus on maximizing your BA score and scoring as high as possible in CAT. You didn’t mention your reservation status, but since you’re a non-engineer, you get some academic diversity marks. Also, if you’re a female candidate, you would get additional gender diversity points.

Right now, all the thoughts about whether you can get into IIM ABC or other institutes might be overwhelming. Focus entirely on your CAT preparation and graduation score improvement. Once you have those in place, you can take the next steps accordingly.

What Makes a Strong Profile for IIM Admission?

There’s no one-size-fits-all here, but these are the pillars:

  • 10th Standard Marks: Above 85% is excellent. Below 70% may need compensation via CAT percentile.
  • 12th Standard Marks: Again, above 80% is ideal. Mid-70s is still okay but might require a stronger CAT score.
  • Graduation Percentage/CGPA: Above 7.5 CGPA or 75% is seen positively. Below 60% is usually a red flag.
  • Work Experience: 12–36 months is the sweet spot. No experience?
  • Academic Background: Non-engineers get diversity points. Arts, Commerce, Agriculture, etc., are valuable.

How Category Affects Your IIM Chances

Here’s the honest truth: being from a reserved category like SC, ST, or OBC-NCL makes a substantial difference in your chances of securing a seat at an IIM.

  • SC/ST Candidates: You can get BLACKI calls with 85–90 percentile.
  • OBC Candidates: Usually need 92–95 percentile for BLACKI.
  • General Candidates (GEM): Need 97–99.7 percentile, depending on profile strength.

You have a strong profile, and with dedicated effort, you have a good chance of making it to a top B-school if you score around the 99 percentile in CAT. If you're a fresher, that's perfectly fine. If not, you might miss out on some points for work experience, but that shouldn’t be a major concern right now. Your primary focus should be on the CAT exam—aim for a high percentile, and the rest will fall into place. All the best.

Hi! You have excellent 10th and 12th marks, which is a strong positive. While your undergraduate score might be a slight drawback, it's still decent at 70%, so it shouldn't be a major hurdle. Having 33 months of work experience definitely gives you a strong edge. Assuming you're from the GEM category, a CAT score in the 98–99 percentile range should fetch you calls from most of the top MBA colleges in India. All the best!
