CAT 2027 VARC Syllabus
The CAT 2027 VARC syllabus consists of two major topics: Reading Comprehension (RC) and Verbal Ability (VA). The CAT 2027 VARC syllabus tests the candidate’s skills in comprehending the passage, identifying the author's point of view, interpreting concepts, and making logical connections between sentences. Since there hasn't been any announcement about the official topic-wise syllabus by the IIMs, the CAT 2027 VARC syllabus will continue to follow the trend of past CAT exams.
Some of the important aspects are reading comprehension, para jumbles, para summary, odd sentence out, and paragraph completion. The candidates need to practice these aspects to enhance their skills in comprehension and verbal reasoning.
CAT 2027 VARC Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme
The exam pattern for CAT 2027 VARC section has not yet been officially announced. As per the exam pattern of the recently held CAT examination, it is expected that this section will include RC and VA type questions along with a time limit to solve the section. The candidates can refer to the latest exam pattern for preparation, although the final exam pattern will be known after the official CAT 2027 announcement.
Exam Parameter | Expected Details for CAT 2027 |
Total questions | 24 |
Reading Comprehension | 16 questions |
Verbal Ability | 8 questions |
Total marks | 72 |
Sectional time limit | 40 minutes |
Correct answer | +3 marks |
Incorrect MCQ | −1 mark |
Incorrect TITA question | No negative marking |
Unattempted question | 0 marks |
The above figures depend on the pattern of CAT exam held recently and can be revised for CAT 2027. According to the recently followed marking pattern, a candidate is awarded three marks for each correct response, whereas one mark is deducted for each wrong MCQ question. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers in the Type in the Answer (TITA) type questions.
As the VARC section is very time-bound, candidates must practice how to pick questions and ensure that enough time is allocated for RC as well as VA questions. Please refer to the official notification for CAT 2027 when released for final details of the number of questions, time allotted, and marking scheme.
CAT VARC Topic-Wise Weightage Based on Previous Years
The RC VA section of CAT always focuses more on Reading Comprehension (RC) than on Verbal Ability (VA). The ratio of RC to VA, as per CAT past years’ papers, is that 16 out of 24 questions are based on RC, whereas the other 8 questions comprise various VA questions. The number of VA questions may vary each year; therefore, students appearing for CAT 2027 must refer to previous years’ weightage but not predict based on it. The following table summarises the reported topic-wise distribution in recent CAT exams.
Topic | CAT 2025 | CAT 2024 | CAT 2023 | CAT 2022 | CAT 2021 |
16 | 16 | 16 | 16 | 16 | |
2 | 3 | 2 | 3 | 3 | |
2 | 0 | 2 | 3 | 3 | |
2 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 2 | |
2 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 0 | |
Total questions | 24 | 24 | 24 | 24 | 24 |
Comprehension will continue to be the most important section because it comprises almost two-thirds of the section. The candidate must practice para summation, para jumbles, odd sentence out, and paragraph completion, as the combination of these question types can differ from slot to slot and year to year.
While preparing for CAT 2027, give more importance to RC along with solving all forms of VA. Use previous year question papers to get acquainted with the type of questions and their level of difficulty; however, do not rely on previous years' weightage.

Important Reading Comprehension Topics for CAT 2027
It is not mandatory to study any particular topics in order to prepare for the CAT 2027 Reading Comprehension Syllabus. From past CAT examination papers, the passages that were taken for RC have been about topics in the areas of philosophy, science, economics, history, literature, technology, and society.
The following topics are useful to include in your CAT 2027 RC preparation:
Topic | Areas to Practise |
Philosophy and Ethics | Human nature, morality, knowledge, and abstract ideas |
Science and Technology | Scientific discoveries, artificial intelligence, and technological developments |
Economics and Business | Economic growth, markets, inequality, and consumer behaviour |
History and Culture | Civilisations, cultural practices, historical interpretations, and art |
Society and Psychology | Human behaviour, social structures, identity, and decision-making |
Environment and Ecology | Biodiversity, climate change, conservation, and ecosystems |
Politics and Public Policy | Governance, political systems, public institutions, and policy debates |
Language and Literature | Language development, literary criticism, communication, and interpretation |
Work on your skills in pinpointing the central theme, drawing conclusions, comprehending the tone used by the writer, and analyzing the arguments made. CAT RC measures comprehension rather than the candidate’s knowledge about the subject matter. Attempt past year papers to get acquainted with various styles.

Most Important Verbal Ability Topics for CAT 2027
The VA section of CAT 2027 will comprise question types including para summary, para jumbles, odd sentence out, and sentence/paragraph completion. It must be noted that the pattern of combination of these question types changes every year, according to previous CAT papers. Therefore, students must practice all of these question types.
Topic | What It Tests |
Para Summary | Identifying the central idea of a paragraph without changing its meaning |
Para Jumbles (TITA) | Arranging sentences in a logical and coherent order |
Odd Sentence Out (TITA) | Identifying the sentence that does not fit the paragraph's central theme |
Para Completion / Sentence Insertion | Finding the most suitable position for a sentence within a paragraph |
Paragraph Completion | Selecting a sentence that logically completes a paragraph |
These formats have appeared in different combinations across recent CAT papers, although their frequency varies by year. Candidates need to solve the previous years' questions so that they get an idea about how to think for each type of question. One should concentrate on the main point of the question and how different sentences are interconnected to one another. This practice will surely help in CAT 2027.
How to Prepare for CAT 2027 VARC From Zero?
For those who have just started CAT 2027 VARC preparation from scratch, the first thing that they should do is build their reading and comprehension skills and then work on answering questions, rather than working on answering a large number of questions right from the start.
Follow these steps to build your VARC preparation:
Build a daily reading habit: Read CAT Daily Articles on topics such as science, economics, philosophy, and society. Focus on understanding the author's argument rather than just reading quickly and try to write them down daily to promote the habit of active reading.
Start with RC passages: Begin with one passage a day. Identify its central idea, the author's tone, and the main points before attempting the questions.
Practise VA questions: Start with para summaries, para jumbles, and odd-sentence-out questions. Learn to identify the logical connections between sentences.
Solve previous-year CAT questions: Once you understand the basics, practise previous-year questions to become familiar with CAT's question styles and difficulty levels.
Review your mistakes: Check why an answer was incorrect. For RC, identify whether you misunderstood the passage or selected an unsupported option. For VA, review the paragraph's logic and structure.
Introduce timed practice gradually: Once your accuracy improves, practise RC passages and VA questions within time limits. Take sectional tests regularly to assess your progress.
Tip: It is better to be consistent with practice than to worry about how many problems you solve each day. Start with something manageable and work up from there.
