IOQM 2023 Question Paper

The IOQM 2023 question paper is a valuable practice resource for students preparing for IOQM 2026. The examination was conducted on September 3, 2023, as the first stage of the 2023–24 Mathematical Olympiad selection cycle.

The paper contained 30 numerical-answer questions covering algebra, geometry, number theory and combinatorics. Questions required one-digit or two-digit answers, which candidates had to mark on an OMR sheet. The use of calculators, mobile phones and programmable watches was prohibited.

IOQM 2023 Question Paper: Exam Pattern

The IOQM 2023 paper had a duration of three hours and carried 100 marks. It was divided into three groups based on marks per question. The first ten questions carried 2 marks each, the next ten carried 3 marks each and the final ten carried 5 marks each.

IOQM 2023 Exam PatternDetails
Examination dateSeptember 3, 2023
Examination duration3 hours
Total questions30
Maximum marks100
Answer typeOne-digit or two-digit numerical answers
Questions 1–102 marks each
Questions 11–203 marks each
Questions 21–305 marks each
Mode of answeringOMR sheet
Negative markingNo

All questions were compulsory, and there was no negative marking. However, candidates had to completely darken the correct bubbles with a black or blue ballpoint pen. The handwritten number on the OMR sheet was not considered for evaluation if the corresponding bubbles were marked incorrectly.

The pattern rewarded both accuracy and question selection. Although students could attempt every question without the risk of losing marks, spending too much time on a difficult five-mark problem could reduce the time available for shorter questions.

IOQM 2023 Question Paper Difficulty Level

Based on analysis of the official paper, the overall difficulty level of IOQM 2023 can be classified as moderate to difficult. The paper was particularly demanding because of its high combinatorics weightage and the multi-step reasoning required in several five-mark questions.

Question GroupMarks per QuestionBroad Difficulty Level
Questions 1–102 marksEasy to moderate
Questions 11–203 marksModerate
Questions 21–305 marksDifficult
Overall paper100 marksModerate to difficult

The opening questions were comparatively approachable but still required familiarity with topics such as logarithms, rational numbers, Diophantine equations, polygons, tiling and sequences. The middle section involved longer algebraic, geometric and combinatorial reasoning.

Questions 21–30 formed the most challenging part. They tested non-increasing functions, geometric arrangements, lattice-point geometry, polygon diagonals, combinatorial invariants, representations of integers and divisor functions. Consequently, routine school-level formula application was not sufficient for scoring well.

IOQM Important Topics and Weightage

The official IOQM Syllabus lists algebra, combinatorics, geometry and number theory as the four major areas of Mathematical Olympiad preparation. Students are also expected to be familiar with the mathematics covered in NCERT Classes 8, 9 and 10.

The following topic distribution is based on the primary concept used in each question. Some questions combine two or more areas, so their classification may vary depending on the solution method.

TopicApprox. QuestionsApprox. MarksWeightage
Combinatorics114141%
Geometry82828%
Number Theory82424%
Algebra377%
Total30100100%

Combinatorics had the highest weightage. Its questions covered tiling, dice colourings, graph colouring, polygon diagonals, counting sets, extremal arrangements and invariants. Geometry included medians, regular polygons, ex-radii, centroids, circumcentres, lattice points and trapeziums.

The major IOQM Important topics identified from the paper include:

  • Basic and advanced enumeration
  • Recurrence relations and sequences
  • Graph colouring and combinatorial geometry
  • Divisibility, primes and square-free numbers
  • Diophantine equations and divisor functions
  • Polynomials and logarithms
  • Triangle centres, regular polygons and coordinate geometry
  • Invariants and extremal counting

Students should use the official HBCSE Mathematical Olympiad syllabus as the main reference. Topic weightage can change every year, so no area should be completely ignored based on the 2023 distribution alone.

How to Use the IOQM 2023 Question Paper for Preparation?

Attempt this IOQM previous-year paper as a three-hour mock before checking the official answer key. Use an OMR-style sheet and follow the actual examination rules. This will help measure concept clarity, calculation accuracy, question selection and time management.

StepRecommended Action
Attempt the paperSolve all 30 questions within three hours
Check responsesUse the official answer key
Classify mistakesSeparate conceptual, calculation and interpretation errors
Analyse timeIdentify questions that consumed excessive time
Revise topicsReturn to the relevant part of the IOQM Syllabus
ReattemptSolve incorrect and skipped questions after revision

During analysis, write down the key observation needed for each unsolved problem. For example, record whether the question required an invariant, a divisibility property, a suitable construction or a smarter counting method. This is more useful than copying the complete solution.

After completing the 2023 paper, solve the 2024 and 2025 papers using the same process. Comparing multiple IOQM previous-year papers will reveal recurring concepts while also preparing you for unexpected changes in topic weightage and difficulty.

IOQM 2023 Question Paper: Conclusion

The IOQM 2023 question paper is a useful preparation resource for understanding the exam pattern, difficulty level and topic-wise weightage. Its strong focus on combinatorics, geometry and multi-step reasoning makes it particularly helpful for students who want to test their conceptual clarity and question-selection strategy before IOQM 2026.

Students should solve this IOQM previous-year paper within the official three-hour duration and analyse every incorrect or skipped question. Revising the relevant IOQM syllabus topics and comparing the paper with the 2024 and 2025 papers can help identify recurring IOQM important topics, improve accuracy and build confidence for the examination.
