IIT vs IIIT Admission Process

It is important for engineering aspirants to be aware of the admission process for both IITs and IIITs. While IIT admission follows a single well-defined path through JEE Advanced and JoSAA, the IIIT admission route is more varied and depends entirely on the institution. The 26 MoE-funded and PPP model IIITs admit students through JEE Main via JoSAA. However, the three top-tier autonomous institutions, namely IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Bangalore, and IIIT Delhi, do NOT participate in JoSAA and each follows a completely different admission process.

IIT Admission Process

Appear for JEE Main

Students must first qualify JEE Main to become eligible for JEE Advanced.

Become Eligible for JEE Advanced

Only top-performing JEE Main candidates are eligible to sit for JEE Advanced.

Clear JEE Advanced

Candidates compete for seats across all IITs based on their JEE Advanced rank.

Participate in JoSAA Counselling

Seat allocation is based on JEE Advanced rank, category, seat availability, and candidate preferences.

IIIT Admission Process

The IIIT admission process is not uniform. It is critical to understand that the three most prominent autonomous IIITs, which are IIIT Hyderabad (IIIT-H), IIIT Bangalore (IIIT-B), and IIIT Delhi (IIIT-D), each have entirely separate and independent admission processes. None of them participate in JoSAA counselling. The remaining 26 MoE and PPP model IIITs, such as IIIT Allahabad, IIIT Lucknow, and ABV-IIITM Gwalior, admit students through JEE Main via JoSAA.

Note: IIIT Delhi is formally known as Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi (IIIT-D), and IIIT Hyderabad is formally known as International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT-H). Both are fully autonomous institutions and are structurally distinct from the MoE/PPP model IIITs.

IIIT Hyderabad (IIIT-H) Admission

IIIT-H does NOT use JEE Advanced for regular B.Tech admissions. Admission is strictly through IIIT-H's own independent portal. The primary mode uses JEE Main Common Rank List (CRL) marks or percentile. IIIT-H also offers additional admission modes including its own UGEE (Undergraduate Engineering Examination), Olympiad-based entries, and other merit-based channels. Students do not need JEE Advanced to apply.

IIIT Bangalore (IIIT-B) Admission

IIIT-B uses its own portal and follows the Best JEE Rank (BJR) system. BJR takes the better of a student's JEE Main CRL or JEE Advanced CRL. This means students who have only appeared for JEE Main can apply normally without needing JEE Advanced. Students who have appeared for both exams benefit from whichever rank is stronger.

IIIT Delhi (IIIT-D) Admission

IIIT-D does NOT use JEE Advanced and does NOT conduct independent counselling. Regular B.Tech admission at IIIT Delhi is based on JEE Main ranks and is conducted through JAC Delhi, which is the Joint Admission Counselling process that also covers DTU, NSUT, and IGDTUW. A small number of specialized seats at IIIT-D are also filled through UCEED scores or Class 12 marks for specific programs.

MoE/PPP Model IIITs Admission

Appear for JEE Main

Students need a valid JEE Main score for admission to the 26 MoE and PPP model IIITs.

JoSAA Counselling

All 26 MoE/PPP model IIITs participate in JoSAA counselling for seat allotment.

Seat Allotment

Seats are allotted based on JEE Main rank, category, and institute preference.

Students preparing for JEE can strengthen their preparation using JEE Study Material and regularly practice through the JEE Question Bank available on the same platform.

IIT vs IIIT Cut-Off

Students need to understand cut-off trends when comparing IITs and IIITs. The cut-offs depend on the level of competition, the branch's demand, the institute's reputation, and the availability of seats. As a general rule, IITs demand a lower overall rank due to the use of JEE Advanced, while IIIT cut-offs based on JEE Main rank vary widely depending on the institution and program.
