Swarts Reaction (Fluorinating Method)

Rarely Tested

$$\text{R--Cl} / \text{R--Br} + \text{AgF} \to \text{R--F} + \text{AgCl} \downarrow / \text{AgBr} \downarrow$$

Concept: Synthesis of alkyl fluorides by heating alkyl chlorides/bromides in the presence of metallic fluorides such as $$\text{AgF}$$, $$\text{Hg}_2\text{F}_2$$, $$\text{CoF}_2$$, or $$\text{SbF}_3$$.

Direct fluorination of alkanes is violent and uncontrolled, making Swarts halogen exchange the primary method to synthesize fluoroalkanes.
