Azo Coupling Reactions (Dye Synthesis)

Rarely Tested

Coupling with Phenol:

$$\begin{aligned}\text{Ar-N}_2^+\text{Cl}^- + \text{C}_6\text{H}_5\text{OH} \xrightarrow{\text{pH } 9-10} \text{p-Hydroxyazobenzene} \quad (\text{Orange Dye})\end{aligned}$$

Coupling with Aniline:

$$\begin{aligned}\text{Ar-N}_2^+\text{Cl}^- + \text{C}_6\text{H}_5\text{NH}_2 \xrightarrow{\text{pH } 4-5} \text{p-Aminoazobenzene} \quad (\text{Yellow Dye}) \end{aligned}$$

Concept: Electrophilic aromatic substitution where the weak diazonium cation selectively attacks highly activated aromatic rings at the para-position. Tight pH regulation is mandatory: phenols require alkaline buffers to generate highly active phenoxide ions, whereas anilines require weakly acidic environments to balance nitrogen protonation against ring access.

Notation:

  • $$\text{-N=N-}$$ = Extended azo linkage chromophore creating vivid color profiles; Reaction yields highly stable, conjugated crystalline dyes.
