Sandmeyer vs. Gattermann Transformations

Rarely Tested

Sandmeyer Path:

$$\text{Ar-N}_2^+\text{Cl}^- \xrightarrow{\text{CuX} \, / \, \text{HX}} \text{Ar-X} + \text{N}_2(g)$$

where X = Cl, Br, CN

Gattermann Path:

$$\text{Ar-N}_2^+\text{Cl}^- \xrightarrow{\text{Cu powder} \, / \, \text{HX}} \text{Ar-X} + \text{N}_2(g) + \text{CuCl}$$

Concept: Synthetically vital radical nucleophilic substitutions that displace the diazonium group from an aromatic ring. The Sandmeyer variant uses copper(I) salts as carriers and consistently achieves significantly higher yields than the Gattermann route, which uses finely divided raw copper metal powder.

Notation:

  • $$\text{CuCN / KCN}$$ = Direct route to synthesize benzonitriles; The escaping driving force is structural molecular nitrogen ($$\text{N}_2$$) gas evolution.
