Magnetic Behavior Condition

Rarely Tested

Criteria: $$\begin{aligned} \text{Unpaired Electrons } (n \ge 1) &\implies \text{Paramagnetic (Attracted to magnetic fields)} \\ \text{All Electrons Paired } (n = 0) &\implies \text{Diamagnetic (Repelled by magnetic fields)} \end{aligned}$$

Concept: Predicts the magnetic response of a molecule based on the presence or complete absence of unpaired spins within its filled molecular orbitals.

Notation:

  • $$n$$ = Total count of unpaired electrons found in the electronic configuration.
