Hybridization States vs. Steric Number

Rarely Tested

$$\begin{aligned} H=2 &\implies \text{sp} \\ H=3 &\implies \text{sp}^2 \\ H=4 &\implies \text{sp}^3 \\ H=5 &\implies \text{sp}^3\text{d} \\ H=6 &\implies \text{sp}^3\text{d}^2 \\ H=7 &\implies \text{sp}^3\text{d}^3 \end{aligned}$$

Concept: Maps the calculated steric number directly onto its corresponding idealized orbital hybridization state.

Notation:

  • $$H$$ = Steric number;
  • $$\text{sp, sp}^2\text{, sp}^3\text{, sp}^3\text{d, sp}^3\text{d}^2\text{, sp}^3\text{d}^3$$ = Resulting molecular hybridization configurations.
