Best IIITs Through CSAB Special Rounds 2026
CSAB Special Rounds provide another admission opportunity after the completion of JoSAA counselling. The Central Seat Allocation Board conducts two Special Rounds to fill seats remaining vacant in the NIT+ System, which includes NITs, IIEST Shibpur, IIITs, SPAs and other government-funded technical institutes. Seat allocation is based on JEE Main 2026 ranks and the candidate’s fresh CSAB choice list.
JoSAA 2026 includes 26 IIITs. However, there is no official CSAB ranking that identifies one institute as the “best” IIIT. The right option depends on the programme, fees, campus, academic interests, placement record, location and the choices available for the candidate’s category and seat pool.
CSAB has released the final published vacancy document for the 2026 Special Rounds. However, the official PDF is titled “Tentative Seat Vacancy for CSAB Special Rounds 2026.” The vacancies shown in it are not guaranteed to remain unchanged. CSAB also displays all programmes for which a candidate is eligible during choice filling, irrespective of whether a vacancy is shown in the published table. Candidates may therefore fill acceptable institute-programme choices that do not appear in the vacancy list.
Students planning to participate can use the CSAB College Predictor to prepare an initial preference list. They should also keep checking the CSAB Counselling 2026 page and the official CSAB portal for schedule, allotment and reporting updates.

List of Top IIITs Participating in CSAB Counselling
The following table presents an editorial shortlist of IIITs that students may consider during CSAB choice filling. It is not an official ranking.
The vacancy figures are totals across all listed categories and seat pools, including gender-neutral, female-only and PwD seats. Therefore, the total shown against an institute does not represent the number of seats available to every candidate.
| IIIT | Programmes appearing in the 2026 vacancy list | Total listed vacancies* |
|---|---|---|
| IIIT Allahabad | Information Technology, IT–Business Informatics, ECE and five-year dual-degree programmes | 78 |
| ABV-IIITM Gwalior | CSE, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mathematics and Scientific Computing, Integrated B.Tech. IT–M.Tech. IT and Integrated B.Tech. IT–MBA | 58 |
| IIIT Lucknow | Computer Science, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology and Computer Science and Business | 50 |
| PDPM IIITDM Jabalpur | CSE, ECE, Mechanical Engineering and Smart Manufacturing | 113 |

| IIIT Surat | CSE, ECE, CSE with AI and Machine Learning, CSE Cyber Security, and Mathematics and Computing | 98 |
*Vacancies are the sum of the category-wise and seat-pool-wise entries shown in the final published vacancy PDF. They remain tentative for the purpose of seat allocation.
A higher vacancy count does not necessarily mean that admission will be easy. Many vacancies may belong to specific categories, female-only pools or PwD categories. Candidates must check the exact institute, programme, quota, category and seat pool applicable to them.
Best IIITs Through CSAB for CSE and IT
Computer Science, Information Technology and related specialisations continue to be common preferences among JEE Main candidates. The following programmes had vacancies in the final published CSAB 2026 document.
| Institute | CSE, IT or related programme | Listed vacancies across all categories and pools |
|---|---|---|
| IIIT Allahabad | Information Technology | 38 |
| IIIT Allahabad | Information Technology–Business Informatics | 2 |
| ABV-IIITM Gwalior | Computer Science and Engineering | 14 |
| ABV-IIITM Gwalior | Integrated B.Tech. IT and M.Tech. IT | 10 |
| IIIT Lucknow | Computer Science | 16 |
| IIIT Lucknow | Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence | 13 |
| IIIT Lucknow | Information Technology | 12 |
| PDPM IIITDM Jabalpur | Computer Science and Engineering | 42 |
| IIIT Kota | Computer Science and Engineering | 31 |
| IIIT Kota | Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering | 14 |
| IIIT Vadodara | Computer Science and Engineering | 91 |
| IIIT Dharwad | Computer Science and Engineering | 95 |
| IIIT Kottayam | Computer Science and Engineering | 105 |
| IIIT Nagpur | Computer Science and Engineering | 41 |
| IIIT Surat | Computer Science and Engineering | 32 |
These numbers should be interpreted carefully. For example, the 105 listed CSE vacancies at IIIT Kottayam are distributed among different categories and seat pools. An OPEN gender-neutral candidate cannot treat all 105 as seats available under the OPEN gender-neutral pool.
Students should also avoid choosing a programme only because its name includes Artificial Intelligence, Data Science or Cyber Security. They should examine the curriculum, compulsory courses, electives, faculty, laboratories and placement data published by the institute.
CSE in one institute is not automatically better than IT, Mathematics and Computing or another computing-related programme elsewhere. Candidates should compare the actual curriculum and programme structure rather than relying only on the branch title.

Best IIITs Through CSAB for ECE and Other Branches
The 2026 vacancy list also contains several ECE, electronics, mathematics, manufacturing and interdisciplinary programmes.
| Institute | ECE or another programme | Listed vacancies across all categories and pools |
|---|---|---|
| IIIT Allahabad | Electronics and Communication Engineering | 20 |
| ABV-IIITM Gwalior | Electrical and Electronics Engineering | 13 |
| ABV-IIITM Gwalior | Mathematics and Scientific Computing | 12 |
| PDPM IIITDM Jabalpur | Electronics and Communication Engineering | 24 |
| PDPM IIITDM Jabalpur | Smart Manufacturing | 27 |
| PDPM IIITDM Jabalpur | Mechanical Engineering | 20 |
| IIIT Kota | Electronics and Communication Engineering | 27 |
| IIIT Dharwad | Electronics and Communication Engineering | 54 |
| IIIT Kottayam | Electronics and Communication Engineering | 22 |
| IIIT Ranchi | Electronics and Communication Engineering | 43 |
| IIIT Nagpur | Electronics and Communication Engineering | 40 |
| IIIT Nagpur | ECE with Internet of Things | 25 |
| IIIT Bhagalpur | Electronics and Communication Engineering | 63 |
| IIIT Bhagalpur | Mechatronics and Automation Engineering | 50 |
| IIIT Surat | Electronics and Communication Engineering | 35 |
| IIIT Una | Electronics and Communication Engineering | 30 |
ECE may lead to opportunities in electronics, communication systems, embedded systems, VLSI, semiconductor-related work and software, depending on the curriculum, electives, student skills and recruiters visiting the institute. It should not be presented as a guaranteed route to a particular industry.
Similarly, Mathematics and Computing, Smart Manufacturing and Mechatronics should be selected only after checking the course structure. These programmes are not interchangeable with CSE merely because they contain programming, mathematics or automation subjects.

CSAB Cutoffs for Top IIITs
Official CSAB 2026 opening and closing ranks are not available yet as of July 31, 2026. The CSAB Special Round-I seat-allotment result is scheduled for August 6, 2026, at 5:00 PM, while Special Round-II is scheduled for August 12, 2026, at 5:00 PM. The actual 2026 cutoff data can be determined only after the allotment results are released.
Therefore, tables describing IIIT Allahabad as “very competitive” or IIIT Kota as “moderate” should not be presented as confirmed 2026 cutoff data.
Candidates can use the following information while estimating their chances:
| Data point | How it should be used |
|---|---|
| JoSAA 2026 opening and closing ranks | To understand demand during regular JoSAA rounds |
| Previous-year CSAB opening and closing ranks | To study how far ranks moved in earlier Special Rounds |
| CSAB 2026 vacancy list | To identify listed vacancies for a category and seat pool |
| Programme and category | To compare the correct rank type and relevant seat |
| Choice order | To ensure preferred programmes are placed above less-preferred options |
A larger number of vacancies does not guarantee a substantially lower closing rank. The final cutoff depends on JEE Main ranks, category, gender pool, the number of candidates participating and the order in which candidates arrange their choices.
Candidates must also distinguish between OPEN ranks and category ranks while checking previous-year cutoffs. Data from one category or seat pool should not be applied directly to another.

How to Choose the Right IIIT During CSAB Choice Filling
Fill Fresh Choices
JoSAA choices do not automatically carry forward to CSAB. Candidates must complete fresh CSAB registration and fill a new preference list. The official brochure states that all eligible programmes will be displayed irrespective of their vacancy status.
Follow Your Genuine Preference Order
Place the institute-programme combination you want most at the top. Do not place a “safe” option above a programme you actually prefer more. The allotment system considers the choice list in the submitted order.
Fill All Acceptable Choices
Candidates should include every programme they are genuinely willing to join. They should not restrict the list only to choices shown in the vacancy PDF because additional vacancies may arise later.
At the same time, they should not add a programme they would refuse to join. A listed choice can result in an allotment if the candidate’s rank and category permit it.
Do Not Use Vacancy Numbers as Cutoffs
A programme showing 50 vacancies does not mean all 50 seats are available to one candidate. Check the category, seat pool and programme-wise breakup before estimating the possibility of admission.
Check Official Institute Information
CSAB advises candidates to visit the respective institute websites for first-hand information about fees, fee waivers, infrastructure, hostels, internships and placement opportunities. Candidates should use the latest institute reports rather than unverified package figures circulating online.
Understand the Risk to a Retained JoSAA Seat
A candidate retaining an NIT+ seat from JoSAA may participate in CSAB. However, if a new seat is allotted through CSAB, the previously secured JoSAA seat is automatically cancelled. The candidate cannot reclaim the earlier seat merely because the new allotment is later found less suitable.
The CSAB College Predictor can help create a preliminary list, but its results should be treated as estimates rather than an official admission guarantee.
Factors to Consider Before Joining an IIIT Through CSAB
| Factor | What candidates should verify |
|---|---|
| Programme structure | Core subjects, electives, specialisations, laboratory work and academic flexibility |
| Career alignment | Whether the curriculum matches software, electronics, research, analytics, design or other career interests |
| Placement information | Placement year, eligible batch size, students placed, median or average salary and recruiter roles |
| Fees and ROI | Tuition fee, hostel fee, mess charges, one-time charges, scholarships and fee-waiver rules |
| Campus status | Permanent or temporary campus, hostel availability, laboratories, library and sports facilities |
| Faculty and research | Faculty profiles, research areas, funded projects, laboratories and higher-study opportunities |
| Location | Travel connectivity, climate, living arrangements and access to internships |
| Category and seat pool | Whether the vacancy is OPEN, GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, gender-neutral or female-only |
| Programme restrictions | Medical, visual, PwD or programme-specific eligibility conditions |
| Reporting requirements | Fee-payment deadlines, document verification, willingness options and physical reporting dates |
| Previous cutoffs | Relevant category-wise and programme-wise JoSAA and CSAB closing ranks |
| Personal preference | Whether the student would actually be comfortable studying that programme for four or five years |
Candidates should compare institutes using consistent data. For example, an average package from one graduating batch should not be compared with a median package from another institute without checking batch size and placement year.
Best IIITs Through CSAB Special Rounds 2026: Conclusion
The best IIITs through CSAB Special Rounds 2026 cannot be identified through vacancy numbers alone. The final published vacancy PDF shows several opportunities in IT, CSE, ECE, AI, Data Science, Mathematics and Computing, Smart Manufacturing and other programmes. However, the official document continues to classify these vacancies as tentative, and additional vacancies may become available during counselling.
Candidates should fill fresh choices in genuine preference order, include all acceptable programmes, check category-wise availability and verify fees, curriculum, infrastructure and placements from official institute sources. They should also understand the effect of a new CSAB allotment on any seat retained from JoSAA. Use the CSAB College Predictor for preliminary guidance and follow the CSAB Counselling 2026 page for official cutoff, allotment and reporting updates
