Question 57

The present ages of Vishal and Shekhar are in the ratio of 14 : 17. Six years from now, their ages will be in the ratio of 17 : 20. What is Shekhar's present age?

Solution

The present ages of Vishal and Shekhar are in the ratio of 14 : 17.

Let's assume the present ages of Vishal and Shekhar 14y and 17y respectively.

Six years from now, their ages will be in the ratio of 17 : 20.

$$\frac{14y+6}{17y+6}\ =\ \frac{17}{20}$$

280y+120 = 289y+102

289y-280y = 120-102

9y = 18

y = 2

Shekhar's present age = 17y

= $$17\times2$$

= 34 years
