When to Give GMAT for ISB After CAT 2026? Best Dates for PGP & PGP YL

If you’re aiming for either of the PGP or PGP YL programmes at ISB Hyderabad, a GMAT score is a great way to enter either of them!

But if you're appearing for CAT 2026 on November 29 and/or XAT 2027 on January 3 and are also planning to apply to ISB, when should you take the GMAT? Should you attempt it immediately after CAT, wait until after XAT, or take more time and apply in a later round?

The answer depends on your current GMAT mock scores and how ready your ISB application is. If you're already close to your target score and have your essays and recommendations prepared, an early GMAT attempt could help you meet the PGP Round 2 or PGP YL Round 1 deadline. Otherwise, you can take more time to prepare and target PGP Round 3 or PGP YL Round 2. Here's how to choose the right timeline.

When Should You Take GMAT for ISB After CAT 2026?

CAT 2026 is scheduled for November 29, leaving just seven calendar days before the ISB PGP Round 2 deadline. This is a short window, but students who are already well-prepared for GMAT can consider attempting it immediately after CAT.

However, CAT preparation alone does not guarantee GMAT readiness even though both exams test quantitative and verbal abilities across similar sections. The question formats, reasoning skills and time-management requirements differ.

Before CAT, take at least one full-length GMAT mock to understand where you stand. If your scores are consistently close to your target, an early GMAT attempt may be realistic.

Use the following table to decide your next step.

Your Current Situation

Recommended Strategy

GMAT mock scores are consistently close to your target

Consider attempting GMAT immediately after CAT

GMAT mock scores are significantly below your target

Prepare further and apply in a later round

GMAT preparation is strong, but essays or recommendations are incomplete

Prioritize application readiness and consider a later round if necessary

Preparing for CAT, XAT and GMAT

Consider GMAT after XAT if you are sufficiently prepared

Not appearing for XAT

Attempt GMAT earlier

The takeaway: Don't plan to learn the GMAT syllabus in the seven days after CAT. An early attempt makes sense only if your preparation is already at an advanced stage.

Can You Take GMAT Close to the ISB Application Deadline?

Yes. ISB permits applicants to use unofficial GMAT scores when the test is taken on or before the relevant application deadline, subject to its submission requirements. Candidates can upload their test confirmation email as a PDF, enter their approximate score and arrange for the official score to be sent subsequently.

GMAC states that official GMAT scores are generally available within three to five days, although some reports can take up to 20 days.

Important: ISB accepts test-centre-based GMAT scores only, not online or at-home GMAT scores. Check appointment availability before choosing a test date.

One of the best ways to improve your GMAT score is to practice through study materials curated by experts and top scorers. GMAT Courses by 100 Percentiler offer GMAT study materials that have been curated with GMAT-relevance in mind!

Should You Apply to ISB PGP Round 2 or Round 3?

Your choice between ISB PGP Round 2 and Round 3 should depend on two things: whether you can achieve a competitive GMAT score and whether your application is ready.

Choose Round 2 if Your GMAT Preparation Is Already Strong

The ISB PGP Round 2 deadline is December 6, 2026, just seven days after CAT.

This round makes sense if you're consistently achieving your target GMAT score in mocks and need only final revision before taking the exam. However, your application should also be nearly complete before CAT. Ideally, you should have prepared your essays, identified your recommender and organized your academic and professional information.

This allows you to focus on GMAT immediately after November 29 rather than starting your application from scratch.

Choose Round 3 if You Need More Preparation Time

The ISB PGP Round 3 deadline is January 17, 2027.

If your GMAT mock scores are below your target, or you need more time to strengthen your essays and recommendations, Round 3 may be a better option.

Students appearing for XAT on January 3 can consider taking GMAT around January 8, provided their preparation is sufficiently advanced already. Those skipping XAT may attempt GMAT earlier.

Should You Apply to ISB PGP YL Round 1 or Round 2?

ISB PGP YL applicants have more flexibility after CAT 2026. Round 1 closes on December 20, 2026, while Round 2 closes on February 15, 2027. That gives candidates approximately three weeks after CAT to target Round 1.

If your GMAT mock scores are already close to your target, you can consider attempting GMAT in early or mid-December and applying in Round 1. However, your essays and other application requirements should also be ready.

If you need more preparation time, Round 2 is a sensible alternative. Students appearing for XAT can focus on that exam first and schedule GMAT afterward.

An important difference is that ISB PGP YL accepts CAT scores, unlike ISB PGP. This means candidates may be able to apply without taking GMAT if their CAT score is competitive. However, ISB's currently published detailed eligibility page still refers to CAT 2025 for the previous intake. Candidates targeting the 2027–29 class should confirm the accepted CAT year before relying on CAT 2026 for their application.

Student Situation

Suggested Application Round

Recommended Strategy

Strong GMAT mock scores and application ready

PGP YL Round 1

Attempt GMAT before December 20

Need more GMAT preparation

PGP YL Round 2

Improve mock scores before booking GMAT

Appearing for XAT 2027

PGP YL Round 2

Consider attempting GMAT after January 3

Strong CAT performance

Round 1 or Round 2

Consider CAT instead of GMAT, subject to intake-specific eligibility confirmation

PGP YL is intended for fresh graduates and candidates with a maximum of 24 months of work experience as of June 15 of the joining year. Candidates with more experience should explore the regular PGP and other eligible programmes.

Can You Take GMAT After XAT 2027 for ISB?

Yes, you can take GMAT after XAT 2027 and still apply to ISB, provided you complete the test by the relevant application deadline. XAT 2027 is scheduled for January 3, 2027, from 2 PM to 5 PM. Students preparing for CAT, XAT and GMAT may find it difficult to focus on all three simultaneously.

If you're targeting ISB PGP Round 3, January 8 is a possible GMAT date. This leaves nine calendar days before the January 17 deadline. However, this timeline is suitable only if you're already performing well in GMAT mocks. Students targeting PGP YL Round 2 have until February 15, allowing more time after XAT.

If you're not appearing for XAT, there's no reason to delay GMAT until January 8 if you're ready earlier. An earlier attempt provides additional time to review your score and address any application issues.

Important Note: Remember that GMAT retakes require a minimum gap of 16 days. If you attempt the exam immediately after CAT, you cannot count on a retake before the December 6 PGP Round 2 deadline.

How to Prepare ISB Essays and LORs Alongside GMAT?

Your GMAT score is only one part of your ISB application. Essays, recommendations, academic records and professional achievements also contribute to the admissions process.

If you're targeting PGP Round 2 or PGP YL Round 1, start preparing these materials before CAT. You don't need to dedicate several hours every day, but you should avoid leaving everything until the last week.

Begin by identifying your career goals, leadership experiences, achievements and reasons for choosing ISB. Use specific examples that demonstrate your impact, decision-making and personal development.

For ISB PGP, you must also arrange for an evaluator to submit a recommendation through the online process. Identify an appropriate person early and give them sufficient time to complete it.

ISB Essay Requirements

Programme

Mandatory Essays

Optional Essay

ISB PGP

Leadership Essay – 400 words; Learning Approach Essay – 400 words

One essay – 250 words

ISB PGP YL

Leadership – 400 words; Diversity in Thought – 400 words; Post-Programme Plan & Impact – 250 words

None listed

These requirements are based on ISB's published programme instructions. Applicants should check the relevant intake's application form for any changes.

Aim to complete your first essay drafts before CAT and use the following weeks for revisions. Recommendations should be requested early, as their completion depends on another person. This approach lets you focus primarily on GMAT preparation after CAT rather than managing every part of your application at the last minute.

When to Give GMAT for ISB: Conclusion

If you're appearing for CAT 2026 or XAT 2027 and planning to apply to ISB, your GMAT preparation level should determine when you take the exam. If you're already scoring close to your target in GMAT mocks and have your essays and recommendations ready, you can consider applying to ISB PGP Round 2 or PGP YL Round 1. However, don't rush into an early application round if you're not adequately prepared.

If you need more time to improve your GMAT score or complete your application, ISB PGP Round 3 or PGP YL Round 2 may be better options. Students appearing for XAT can consider taking GMAT after January 3, while those skipping XAT can attempt it earlier. Ultimately, focus on achieving a competitive GMAT score and submitting a strong ISB application rather than simply meeting the earliest deadline.
