NMAT Quant Important Topics
The Quantitative Skills section is the most competitive section for NMAT by GMAC students. With 36 questions in 60 minutes, it is the longest section of the exam and cuts the lazy Prep Time and you go home empty-handed. Learning the NMAT Quant important topics will make you stop wasting your valuable time and be more strategic instead. This article covers topic-wise weightage, high-scoring chapters, section complete syllabus, step by step preparation and the order of priority for your attempt.
NMAT Quant Topic-Wise Weightage
GMAC doesn't release an official topic-wise distribution and NMAT is computer-adaptive, no two candidates will get the same paper. The following ranges are as per the most widely reported question patterns. Consider these as prioritisation suggestions and not prescriptive.

High-Weightage Topics for NMAT Quant
If you don't have much time to prepare, use the following high-weighted topics as a starting point for your plan.
Arithmetic: the backbone of the section
Word problems dominate the arithmetic set but they are all straight forward concepts. Percentages, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, time-speed-distance and time-and-work make a reappearance year after year in different shapes. Quick calculation techniques and equivalents can buy critical seconds for more challenging questions.
Algebra: equations, inequalities and functions
Algebra is another easy scoring area of the section. Clearly explained ideas will be rewarded. Often Algebra will have an introductory linear or quadratic equation/inequality, progressions and function questions. If you are confident in writing equations then these are some of the most scoring questions in the section.
Data Interpretation: calculation speed meets accuracy
Each DI set has many questions, which makes them a high-yielding investment. They test your speed reading ability and the skill of choosing the right figures and approximating intelligently instead of doing everything in detail.
Number System and Modern Mathematics: medium weightage, high scoring
There are not many questions on remainders, factors, permutations and combinations and probability but they tend to be formula-based and concise. A good grip on these will get you a few quick marks.
In case you're looking for a quick checklist of the sub-points that seek-on to train every single day, go from here:
- Percentages, profit and loss, and ratio and proportion
- Time-speed-distance and time and work
- Linear and quadratic equations, and inequalities
- Table-based and caselet-based Data Interpretation sets
- Remainders, factors, permutations and combinations, and probability

How to Prepare the Quant Topics for NMAT?
A well-defined approach is better than multiple hours of study. Here is a step-by-step plan to prepare:
Step 1: Build strong fundamentals- Learn tables up to 30. Recall squares up to 30, cubes up to 15 and common fractions with percentage equivalents. Memorize key formulas for arithmetic, algebra and mensuration on a one-page sheet. Learn one chapter at a time, beginning with arithmetic.
Step 2: Learn shortcuts and calculation speed- Practice mental maths for 15 - 20 mins every day. Utilize the elimination of options and substituting in your Algebra and Number based questions. Use approximation when interpreting data rather than dividing out to get a perfect answer.
Step 3: Practise topic-wise, then mixed sets- Work through 20 to 30 questions on each subject to get a feel for the types of questions. Switch to timed mixed sets of 15-20 questions for exam switching practice. Keep an error file detailing concept lapses, silly errors and questions that took too much time.
Step 4: Take full-length mocks
Take at least 8 to 10 NMAT mock tests before the exam and be guided by the GMAC practice test to understand the interface and pattern. Review each mock for accuracy, attempts and topic wise performance. Identify weaknesses for revision when - After every mock, review weak topics within 48 hours.
Step 5: Keep an error log- Note down whether each mistake was due to a lack of conceptual understanding or a calculation mistake or insufficient time. Study the log at least once a week to improve fast.
Step 6: Optimise your final weeks- Focus more on revising and speed drills than on learning new concepts. Practice question selection: Don't spend 5 minutes on a hard probability or geometry question; go past it, and come back if you have time.
Start with accuracy, because getting more questions right you won't usually get a higher score.
Which NMAT Quant Topics Should You Prioritize?
If you want to focus your preparation, then you will need to prioritise topics by higher return on effort. You can create a Three-Tier Priority Matrix to do this:
Tier 1: Non-Negotiable Core (~60% weight of section)
Begin with these topics. Missing any of these will make clearing the sectional cutoff mathematically unlikely.
- Data Interpretation sets: Bar graphs, tables, pie charts (Target: solve all normal sets in <4 min)
- Core Math: Percentages, Profit & Loss, Ratio & Proportion, Time-Speed-Distance, Time & Work
- Mental Math: Instant fractions, decimals, and mental addition skills
Tier 2: High ROI (~25% weight of section)
Prioritize these topics over advanced algebra - they are relatively time-cheap and are also tested often on standalone questions
- Modern Math: Permutations & Combinations, Classical Probability Question
- Data Sufficiency Strategy: Practicing condition elimination without computing final numerical values.
- Algebraic Fundamentals: Progressions (AP/GP), Linear equations, and basic Quadratic roots.
- Set Theory: 2 set and 3 set Venn diagrams
Tier 3:Selective & Low Frequency (~15%)
Finish these off after completing Tier 1 & 2. Master basic definitions and formulae, don't spend weeks battling theory
- Number Properties: cyclicity, last digit, HCF/LCM, divisibility rules
- Logarithm: Power rule, change of base
- Geometry & Mensuration: Basics Volume, Areas & Perimeter
- Inequalities & modulus: Standard Range evaluations
