IIT Round 4 Cutoff 2026 vs Round 3
Based on IIT Round 4 vs Round 3 comparison, limited movement is noted in the top CSE programmes. Higher movement took place in Mechanical Engineering and a few Electrical Engineering programmes. Among CSE, EE and ME branches, IIT Gandhinagar Mechanical Engineering recorded the largest movement. Its closing rank increased from 6,805 to 6,911. IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras Mechanical Engineering moved by 62 and 61 ranks respectively.
CSE remained much more stable. IIT Bombay moved by one rank, from 65 to 66. IIT Delhi moved by five ranks, while IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee recorded no change. Based on the comparison, those who were close to the previous cutoff had better upgrade possibilities in selected core branches. Top CSE seats have almost no movement due to high demand. In the table below, a positive difference means that the Round 4 closing-rank number increased.
IIT | Branch | Round 3 Closing Rank | Round 4 Closing Rank | Difference |
IIT Gandhinagar | ME | 6,805 | 6,911 | +106 |
IIT Kanpur | ME | 3,005 | 3,067 | +62 |

Factors Affecting IIT Round 4 Cutoff 2026
Different factors determine whether an IIT cutoff remains the same or moves to a higher closing-rank. The change is different for every programme, category and gender pool. Here are all the factors affecting IIT Round 4 cutoff 2026.
Seat Upgrades After Round 3
Choosing Float may move to a higher preference in the next round. Slide can move you to a preferred programme within the allotted institute. These upgrades release the earlier seats for other candidates. The effect depends on how many students receive an upgrade. A branch with little movement may show the same closing rank in consecutive rounds.
Vacant Seats and Withdrawals
A cutoff can move when one either withdraws, fails to complete online reporting or does not confirm the allotted seat. The available seat then enters the next allocation round as per JoSAA rules. This factor affects branches where many candidates have placed other institutes or programmes higher in their preference order.
Demand for Specific IIT Branches
CSE, Artificial Intelligence, Mathematics and Computing, Data Science and Electrical Engineering have strong demand. As a result, closing ranks generally remain lower because more high-ranked candidates prefer them. For example, IIT Bombay CSE closed at 66, while its Civil Engineering programme closed at 4,404 with the difference showing how branch preference changes cutoff within the same IIT.
Institute Preference
Older IITs usually are the most preferred options across a larger number of branches. Their academic reputation, alumni base, location and placement history influence choice filling. Since, programme preference may outweigh institute preference, one may place CSE at a newer IIT above a core branch at an older IIT.
Category-Wise Seat Availability
Each category has a separate seat matrix and rank list. A vacancy in an EWS seat does not automatically change the OPEN cutoff. The same rule applies to OBC-NCL, SC, ST and PwD seats. Also, Female-only supernumerary seats also have separate opening and closing ranks.
Previous-Round Cutoff Position
Candidates whose ranks are close to the Round 3 closing rank have the greatest interest in Round 4 movement. A small increase of 5-10 ranks makes a big difference as the earlier cutoff was highly competitive. The comparison also shows that later-round movement is dynamic rather than fixed.
IIT Round 4 Cutoff 2026: Conclusion
The IIT Round 4 Cutoff 2026 provides important information about the opening and closing ranks for different IITs, branches and reservation categories. CSE remained the most competitive branch, with IIT Bombay CSE closing at rank 66, followed by IIT Delhi at 128 and IIT Madras at 150. Electrical, Mechanical and Civil Engineering offered comparatively wider closing-rank ranges across older and newer IITs.
Candidates should compare their rank only with the relevant programme, category, gender pool and seat type while studying the JoSAA Round 4 cutoff. The comparison between Round 3 and Round 4 shows limited movement in highly preferred CSE programmes but greater changes in selected core branches. JEE Advanced aspirants can use these trends to set realistic rank targets and make informed choices during future JoSAA counselling.
