Factors Affecting IIT CSE Round 3 Cutoff 2026

Every JoSAA counselling round follows a different pattern. Therefore, closing ranks may increase or remain unchanged. These factors usually decide the final cutoff.

1. Seat availability

Available seats play the biggest role. Fewer vacant seats generally create tighter closing ranks. Also in the IITs CSE branch:

Total Gender-Neutral seats = 2,183

Total Female-only seats = 552

Grand Total = 2,183 + 552 = 2,735 seats

It's generally a very competitive branch.

2. Student preferences

Most students prefer IIT Bombay and other leading campuses first. Hence, competition remains higher there.

3. Seat acceptance

Students already holding preferred seats usually freeze them. This reduces movement in later rounds.

4. Upgrades in higher choices

Candidates waiting for better branches often choose the float option. Therefore, small changes appear during later rounds.

5. Category-wise reservation

Every reservation category has separate seat allocation rules. Hence, category cutoffs differ across institutes.

6. Withdrawals

A few candidates leave counselling after joining other institutes. These seats become available in later rounds.

7. Branch demand

IIT CSE remains the first choice for several aspirants. Therefore, closing ranks remains highly competitive every year.

8. Future counselling rounds

If the preferred branch is unavailable, wait for the next allotment. Meanwhile, keep documents ready and follow every counselling update carefully.
