IIFT Selection Criteria 2026 Changes

IIFT has revised its admission evaluation framework for the 2026–28 batch. Those changes will impact both the shortlisting and final selection stages. CAT 2025 weightage at the shortlisting level has been reduced to 90 points, with work experience and gender diversity now included.

IIFT Eligibility Criteria 2026

Candidates must meet basic eligibility requirements to be considered for shortlisting:

IIFT Educational Qualification:

A candidate should have a bachelor's degree from a recognized university in any discipline. Any candidate who is his/her final-year can also apply. IIFT is considering marks up to the last completed semester if the results are awaited.

IIFT Age Limit:

No age restriction applies.

IIFT Work Experience:

It is not mandatory but it is important to note that it will contribute to selection scores.

IIFT CAT 2025 Requirement:

A valid CAT 2025 score is compulsory for admission to IIFT as the institute does not conduct a separate entrance test.

It is also important to note that clearing the overall CAT percentile alone is not enough and Candidates must meet the prescribed sectional cut-offs as well, which cover Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension and Data Interpretation and logical reasoning.

IIFT Shortlisting Criteria 2026

Stage 1 shortlisting operates on a 100-point scale comprising three components:

Parameter

Calculation Method

CAT 2025 Score

(Candidate's CAT Score ÷ Maximum CAT Score) × 90

CAT Score Normalization:

Your CAT score will be normalized against the maximum score achieved in CAT 2025. For example if the maximum score was 300 and you scored 270, your normalized shortlisting score would be (270 ÷ 300) × 90 = 81 points.

Work Experience Rating Scale:

IIFT scores work experience using a bell curve where 30 to 36 months as of September 30 2025 highest weightage

IIFT CAT Cutoff 2026

While IIFT hasn't officially published exact percentile cutoffs, previous CAT cutoff patterns and benchmarks tells it could be:

Expected Cutoffs:

  • General Category: 98+ percentile
  • EWS Category: 96-97 percentile
  • NC-OBC Category: 94-96 percentile
  • SC Category: 85-88 percentile
  • ST Category: 75-80 percentile
  • PwD Category: 75-80 percentile

Important point:

IIFT will apply sectional cutoffs in addition to overall percentile requirements. A candidate with 98 overall percentile but 50 percentile in one section will likely not clear the shortlisting threshold.

Furthermore, the cutoffs may vary depending on the applicant pool's overall quality. Candidates should check iift.ac.in for official cutoff announcements once the shortlisting process concludes.

IIFT Interview Process 2026

Shortlisted candidates will move to Stage 2, which will include a Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI), likely to be held between February and March 2026.

Personal Interview (PI – 20 marks)

The PI is the most important non-CAT component in the final selection in IIFT. The panel tries to understand who you are and why IIFT. You’ll be asked about your academic background, work experience (if any), career goals and why you want to pursue an MBA in International Business. You should expect questions on India’s trade policies, FTAs, WTO, global economic trends and geopolitics.

Group Discussion (GD – 10 marks)

GD checks how you behave in a group. IIFT looks for structured thinking, relevant points, listening skills, and respectful disagreement.

Work Experience Evaluation (5 Points)

Stage 2 will evaluate work experience more deeply than Stage 1. First, your experience receives a rating score based on the same bell curve used earlier.

During the interview, the panel assigns a score (0–10) based on your role, learning and relevance.

How is it calculated?: Final Work Experience Score = (Rating Score × Panel Score) ÷ 10

Only experience in recognised organisations-private or limited companies, government bodies, PSUs, or registered partnerships is considered.

Academic Consistency (5 Points)

This parameter averages your Class 10, 12, and graduation rating scores.

Percentage Range

10

For example, scores of 92% (10), 85% (8), and 78% (5) give an average rating of 7.67, which is then scaled to 5 points. COVID-affected batches receive proportionate adjustments.

IIFT Final Merit List 2026

The final merit will rank all the candidates who were interviewed based on their cumulative score in stage 2 out of 100.

Admissions are offered in descending order until all seats are filled which also accounts for category-based reservations.

How Rankings Work:

Consider two hypothetical candidates:

Candidate A:

  • CAT Score: 52/55
  • PI: 16/20
  • GD: 7/10
  • Gender Diversity: 5/5
  • Work Experience: 3/5
  • Academic Consistency: 4/5
  • Total: 87/100

Candidate B:

  • CAT Score: 55/55
  • PI: 12/20
  • GD: 6/10
  • Gender Diversity: 0/5
  • Work Experience: 2/5
  • Academic Consistency: 3/5
  • Total: 78/100

Despite Candidate B scoring in CAT Candidate A ranks higher because of better interview performance, gender diversity and stronger work experience quality. So overall performance really matters.

How to Maximise Your Chances of Selection at IIFT

  • You should begin by realistically assessing your Stage 1 score using your normalized CAT performance, work experience points and gender diversity marks, if applicable.
  • Do not wait for the shortlist to begin preparation. You should start following international business news, India’s trade policies, FTAs, WTO developments and global supply-chain trends.
  • You should not also forget to research IIFT in depth like its curriculum, Centres of Excellence, faculty strengths and focus on international business, so you can clearly explain why IIFT fits your goals.
  • Build a strong personal narrative that connects your academic background, professional journey and future aspirations. If you have work experience, be ready to discuss your role, learning, and impact in detail as panels value depth and honesty.
  • Practice group discussions to improve clarity, listening skills, and collaborative leadership. Review your academic record and prepare to explain any inconsistencies with maturity.
  • Regularly monitor IIFT’s official website for updates, use any gender diversity advantage responsibly, understand the continued importance of CAT scores, and stay mindful of strict sectional cutoffs.

IIFT Selection Criteria 2026: Conclusion

The IIFT Selection Criteria 2026 focuses on more than just CAT scores. Although CAT 2025 is still the main factor, IIFT now gives proper importance to work experience, gender diversity, academic consistency, and interview performance. This change helps candidates with good professional experience and communication skills stand out, even in a highly competitive admission process.

Candidates planning to apply for IIFT MBA admission 2026 should not depend only on a high CAT percentile. Preparing early for the Personal Interview and Group Discussion, staying updated with international business news, and having a clear career story can greatly improve selection chances. Regularly checking official IIFT updates and understanding the new selection criteria will help candidates stay on the right track.
