Got the Same JoSAA Seat in CSAB Round 1?
If you received the same institute and programme in CSAB Round 1 that you had already secured through JoSAA 2026, it means your existing JoSAA seat has been retained. None of the fresh CSAB choices placed above that seat could be allotted to you in Round 1.
Under the official CSAB rules, candidates who secured an NIT+ System seat through JoSAA by paying both the Seat Acceptance Fee and Partial Admission Fee are classified as Type-6 candidates. They participate in the CSAB Special Rounds while retaining their JoSAA seat.
For these candidates, the secured JoSAA seat is automatically placed as the last choice in the CSAB preference list. It does not have to be entered again during CSAB choice filling.

Receiving the same seat is not a rejection or cancellation. The candidate continues to hold the seat and may remain eligible for a Round 2 upgrade.

Why Was the Same JoSAA Seat Retained in CSAB Round 1?
Type-6 candidates are required to fill fresh choices for the CSAB Special Rounds. Their previous JoSAA choice list becomes invalid for CSAB. However, their secured JoSAA seat is automatically considered as the last choice after all the fresh CSAB preferences.
Therefore, if none of the newly filled choices is available, CSAB retains the existing JoSAA seat.
Seat allotment depends on:
- JEE Main 2026 All India Rank
- Candidate’s category and seat category
- Home State or Other State quota
- Gender pool
- CSAB choice order
- Available seats
- Programme restrictions
- Choices and ranks of other candidates
For example, suppose a candidate secured Civil Engineering at NIT Durgapur through JoSAA. During CSAB choice filling, the candidate adds Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics Engineering as fresh choices. The existing NIT Durgapur Civil seat is automatically placed below these choices.
If none of the preferred programmes is available at the candidate’s rank, the system retains the NIT Durgapur Civil seat.

The most important rule is that once CSAB allots a new seat, the earlier JoSAA seat is automatically and permanently cancelled. The candidate cannot return to it by selecting Surrender or Withdraw later.

Do You Need to Pay IAF-II for the Same JoSAA Seat?
No. Type-6 candidates who secured their JoSAA NIT+ seat by paying both SAF and PAF are not required to pay IAF-II. The official CSAB brochure provides a specific exemption because these candidates have already paid PAF during JoSAA.

For candidates required to pay IAF-II, the official amounts are:
- ₹35,000 for General, GEN-EWS and OBC-NCL candidates
- ₹16,000 for SC, ST and PwD candidates
Type-6 candidates whose documents were successfully verified in the NIT+ System during JoSAA Rounds 1 to 5 are also not required to upload the same documents again during CSAB online reporting.
However, candidates must check their dashboard carefully. If an unexpected payment or document-upload request appears, they should contact the official CSAB helpdesk instead of ignoring it.

Which Willingness Option Should You Select?
The correct willingness option depends on whether you want to finalise the retained seat, seek an upgrade or leave counselling.

Freeze
Freeze means accepting the retained JoSAA seat as final. The candidate will not be considered for an upgrade in CSAB Round 2.
Choose Freeze if you are satisfied with the current institute and programme.
Float
Float allows the candidate to retain the current seat while being considered for a higher-preference programme at any participating institute.
If no higher choice is allotted in Round 2, the candidate continues with the current seat.
Slide
Slide allows the candidate to retain the current seat while seeking a higher-preference programme within the same institute. It does not allow an upgrade to another institute.
Surrender
Surrender cancels the current seat but allows the candidate to participate in Round 2 for choices placed above the surrendered seat.
Type-6 candidates can also select Surrender. However, doing so permanently cancels the JoSAA seat. If no new seat is allotted in Round 2, the candidate may finish CSAB counselling without any seat.
Withdraw
Withdraw cancels the accepted seat and removes the candidate from subsequent seat allocation. It applies whether the seat was retained from JoSAA or newly allotted through CSAB.
What Happens If a Type-6 Candidate Selects Nothing?
The official brochure provides a special default rule for Type-6 candidates:
- If no willingness option is selected, the candidate is automatically moved to Round 2 with Float as the default.
- If the allotted seat is the candidate’s first choice, Freeze becomes the default.
Candidates should still manually select the intended option and confirm their dashboard status to avoid confusion.

Can the Same Seat Be Upgraded in CSAB Round 2?
Yes. The retained JoSAA seat may be upgraded in Round 2 if the candidate selects Float or Slide and a higher-preference seat becomes available.
A Round 2 upgrade may result from:
- Candidates surrendering their Round 1 seats
- Candidates withdrawing from counselling
- Seat cancellations during verification
- Vacancies created after Round 1 reporting
- Changes in category-wise availability
Float candidates may receive a higher choice in any participating institute. Slide candidates may receive a higher programme only within their current institute.
If a higher choice is allotted, it automatically replaces the retained JoSAA seat. The earlier seat cannot be restored.
If no upgrade occurs, candidates who selected Float or Slide continue with their existing seat. CSAB Round 2 is the final Special Round, and all final-round allotments are treated as Freeze.
Which Allotment Letter Should You Use for Admission?
The official 2026 brochure calls the document available after seat allocation the Initial Seat Allotment Intimation Slip. It contains the allotment details and instructions for completing seat confirmation.
Candidates should use the latest document that reflects their final seat after CSAB Round 2.

Got the Same JoSAA Seat in CSAB Round 1: Conclusion
Getting the same JoSAA seat in CSAB Round 1 does not mean that the candidate has been rejected. It simply means that none of the higher CSAB preferences could be allotted at the candidate’s rank.
