Adding One Observation: Sum of Squares

If $$a$$ is added:

$$\sum x_i^2{}_{new}=\sum x_i^2+a^2$$

Usage

- Used to update variance calculations after adding an observation.

Question 1

Let the observations $$x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_{10}$$ have mean $$15$$ and variance $$16.$$ If a new observation $$x_{11}=k$$ is added and the mean of all $$11$$ observations becomes $$16,$$ then the variance of the $$11$$ observations is equal to (closest integer)

Question 2

Let the mean and variance of the observations $$x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_{10}$$ be $$4$$ and $$9$$ respectively. A new observation $$4$$ is added, and the observations $$x_1,x_2$$, which are distinct integers, satisfying $$x_1^2+x_2^2=50$$ are replaced by $$3$$ and $$5$$ respectively. Then the value of $$11\sigma^2,$$ where $$\sigma^2$$ is the new variance, is:
