Minimum Mean Deviation Property

Among all possible values of $$a$$, mean deviation is minimum when:

$$a=M$$

where $$m$$ is the median.

Usage

- Used in questions asking the value about which mean deviation is minimum.

Question 1

Let $$x_1, x_2, \dots, x_n$$ be $$n$$ distinct observations. Let $$f(k) = \sum_{i=1}^n (x_i - k)^2$$ and $$g(k) = \sum_{i=1}^n |x_i - k|$$. If $$f(k)$$ achieves its minimum value at $$k = \lambda$$ and $$g(k)$$ achieves its minimum value at $$k = \mu$$, then:
