Lanthanoid Contraction

Rarely Tested

Definition: The steady, cumulative decrease in atomic and ionic radii across the series from $$\text{La}^{3+}$$ to $$\text{Lu}^{3+}$$.

The Cause: Diffuse shapes of $$4f$$ orbitals $$\rightarrow$$ extremely poor nuclear shielding $$\rightarrow$$ increasing effective nuclear charge ($$Z_{\text{eff}}$$) pulls outer electrons tighter.

The Consequence: $$4d$$ (2nd series) and $$5d$$ (3rd series) transition elements share nearly identical atomic radii (e.g.,$$\text{Zr} \approx \text{Hf}$$ and $$\text{Nb} \approx \text{Ta}$$), making their chemical separation incredibly difficult.
