Anomalous Configurations (3d Series)

Rarely Tested

Exceptional Profiles:

$$\begin{aligned} \text{Chromium (Cr, } Z=24) &\implies [\text{Ar}] \, 3d^5 \, 4s^1 \\ \text{Copper (Cu, } Z=29) &\implies [\text{Ar}] \, 3d^{10} \, 4s^1 \end{aligned}$$

Concept: Explains the electron movement shortcut where an electron shifts because the outer subshells have comparable energy, allowing a smooth transition into $$3d$$ to easily achieve a stable, highly balanced $$3d^{10}$$ configuration.

Notation:

  • $$3d^5$$ = Exceptionally stable, symmetrical half-filled subshell state;
  • $$3d^{10}$$ = Exceptionally stable, symmetrical completely filled subshell state.
