A tube can fill a tank completely in 18 hours. After half the tank is filled. one more similar tube is opened. What is the total time taken to fill the tank completely?
If a tube can completely fill a tank in 18 hrs then half the tank will be filled in 9 hrs.
For the remaining half, now 2 pipes started working. So, the remaining half will be filled in 9/2 = 4.5 hrs.
Total time taken to completely fill the tank = 9+4.5 = 13 hrs 30 mins.
Seven girls can do a piece of work in thirteen days. six boys can do the same piece of work in twelve days. nine men can do the same piece of work in nine days and six women can do the same piece of work in fourteen days. Who are the most efficient?
Seven girls can do a piece of work in thirteen days.
One girl will do the work in 13*7 = 91 days.
Six boys can do the same piece of work in twelve days.
One boy will do the work in 12*6 = 72 days.
Nine men can do the same piece of work in nine days.
One man will do the work in 9*9 = 81 days.
Six women can do the same piece of work in fourteen days.
One woman will do the same work in 14*6 = 84 days.
The most efficient is the one who takes the least amount of time to complete the work i.e. Boys.
A man and a boy received Rs. 1.600 as wages for 5 days for the work they did together. The man's efficiency in the work was three times that of the boy. What are the daily wages of the boy?
If the man's efficiency was 3 times the boy's then he would have done 3 times of the work done by the boy.
So, his wages should also be 3 times the boy's.
Let us assume the daily wages of the boy = X and of the man = 3X.
Total daily wages = 1600/5 = 320.
X + 3X = 320 ==> X = 80.
Daily wages of the boy are 80.
How many kg of rice at Rs. 60 per kg, must be mixed with 30 kg of rice at Rs. 25 per kg, so that the shopkeeper may make a gain 25% on selling the mixture at Rs. 50 per kg?
The shopkeeper gains 25% by selling at 50 per kg which means that his average Cost price = 50/1.25 = 40 per kg.
Let us assume that he buys X kgs at 60 per kg. Total cost = 60X + 30*25 = 60X + 750.
This cost is also equal to 40*(X+30) = 40X + 1200.
Equating both we get: X = 22.5 kgs.
A sample of X litres from a container having a 60 litre mixture of milk and water containing milk and water in the ratio of 2 : 3 is replaced with pure milk so that the container will have milk and water is equal proportions. What is the value of X?
In the container of 60 litres, milk and water were in the proportion 2:3 which means
Milk = $$\frac{2}{5}\times\ 60=24$$ litres and Water = 36 litres.
If X litres of solution is removed and replaced with pure milk, water remaining in the solution = $$36-\frac{3}{5}X$$.
As proportion of milk and water is equal, water is exactly half of the total quantity i.e. half of (60 - X + X = 60 litres) = 30 litres.
$$36-\frac{3}{5}X=30$$
This gives X = 10 litres.
