Based on the information answer the questions which follow.

In a toy shop, there are 5 toys, Doll, Teddy Bear, Remote Car, Board Game and an Airplane. The cost price and selling price are among ₹ 950, ₹ 1000, ₹ 1050, ₹1150 and ₹ 1200. The selling prices are different for all toys, and cost prices are different for all toys. The cost price of Remote Car is equal to the selling price of Airplane and on the sale of both the shop incurred a loss. On selling Teddy Bear the shop earned a profit. The profit earned by selling any article is more than ₹ 50 and the profit is not the same for any product.Similarly, the loss incurred for any two products are not same. The toy shop earned a profit on only 2 products. It is also known that the Cost Price of the Board Game is the lowest while the selling price of Teddy Bear is ₹1150. The Profit/Loss made on selling Doll and Teddy Bear are equal in absolute terms.

Question 78

What is the difference between the cost price and selling price of Board Game?

Solution

Let the cost price of the remote car and selling price of airplane be a and the shop incurred a loss on both.

Since the cost price of the board game is the lowest and the selling price and cost price is not same for any toy therefore, a profit was made on the sale of board game.

Only on two products a profit was made so a loss was made on the sale of doll.

As the selling price is different for all articles and also cost price is different for all articles, therefore, value of a cannot be 950 or 1150.

Since a loss was made on the sale of airplane so value of a cannot be 1200 also.

Now since on the sale of doll and remote car a loss was made so their selling price cannot be 1200 which means board game has a selling price of 1200.

Case 1: When a= 1000

Since a loss was made on the sale remote car, so selling price of remote car will be 950 and selling price of doll will be 1050.

A profit was made on the sale of teddy bear so its cost price will be 1050.

Now since loss made on sale of doll and the profit made on sale of teddy bear are equal in absolute terms therefore, cost price of doll will be 1050 and cost price of airplane will be 1200.

Case 2: When a= 1050

Since a profit was made on the sale of teddy bear so its cost price will be 1000.

The profit made on the sale of teddy bear is equal to the loss made on the sale of doll so loss made on doll should be 150 which is only possible if its cost price is 1150 and selling price is 1000.

Therefore, cost price of airplane becomes 1200 which makes loss made on sale of doll equal to loss made on sale of airplane which is not possible so this case is rejected.
