What is the ratio of the mean proportional between 4.8 and 10.8 and the third proportional to 0.4 and 2.4?

Solution

Mean proportional of 4.8 and 10.8 is -

$$x=\sqrt{(}4.8\times10.8)$$

$$x=\sqrt{(}51.84)$$

x = 7.2

Third proportional of 0.4 and 2.4 is -y

$$\frac{0.4}{2.4}=\frac{2.4}{y}$$

$$0.4y=2.4^2$$

$$y=\frac{5.76}{0.4}=14.4$$

Required ratio = $$x:y=7.2:14.4=1:2$$
