Question 71

If A and B together can do a piece of work in 5 days, and A alone can do the same work in 10 days, then in how many days can B alone do the same piece of work?

Solution

If A and B together can do a piece of work in 5 days, and A alone can do the same work in 10 days.

Let's assume the total work is 10 units.

Efficiency of A = $$\frac{10}{10}$$ = 1 unit/day

Efficiency of A and B together = $$\frac{10}{5}$$ = 2 units/day

Efficiency of B = 2-1 = 1 unit/day

Time taken by B alone to do the same piece of work = $$\frac{10}{1}$$

= 10 days
