Question 55

The sum of two numbers x and y is 48 and their difference is 6. Then x : y = ?

Solution

The sum of two numbers x and y is 48 and their difference is 6.

x+y = 48    Eq.(i)

x-y = 6    Eq.(ii)

Add Eq.(i) and Eq.(ii).

2x = 48+6

2x = 54

x = 27

Put the value of 'x' in Eq.(ii).

27-y = 6

y = 27-6

y = 21

x : y = 27 : 21

= 9 : 7
