Question 54

If the average of five consecutive odd numbers is 17, then what will be the highest number among them ?

Solution

Let the five consecutive odd numbers be x,x+2,x+4,x+6,x+8.
Given, $$\dfrac{x+x+2+x+4+x+6+x+8}{5} = 17$$
=> $$\dfrac{5x+20}{5} = 17$$
=> 5x+20 = 85 => 5x = 65
Therefore, x = 13
Hence, The highest number = x+8 = 13+8 = 21.
