it is given that a + 1/a = 1
and we need to find value of $$a^2 + \frac{1}{a^2}$$
$$a^2 + \frac{1}{a^2}$$ = $$(a + \frac{1}{a})^2$$ - 2
= $$1^2$$ - 2 = -1
