It is said there is a dismal fall of standards everywhere. The leaders who are not equal to the task misguide their followers. The remedy of the malady that affects our political economic and social practices lies in the human individual. What is needed is a change in his nature. For that we should read great classics. Literature brings about the change for the better. It improves the quality of human beings. Great books give great thoughts, broaden our outlook and awaken our souls. They also provide a moral base as the lack of discipline and ideals is inimical to civilizes value.

There are various kinds of books. Some arouse or instruct while others elevate our nature. The first kind of books destroy our ego and give us joy. Now joy is different from pleasure. The books which give joy contain emotions and thoughts recollected in tranquility. Only a seer can produce such books. They deserve not only to read but also to be digested. Through them we establish contract with the mastermind of the past. They hand on to us our tradition. But maintaining a tradition does not mean peaking or doing as our forefathers did following the tradition blindly will render dead and useless. We must make adaptations and bring modifications. However, the individual contribution is largely determined by the pressure brought to bear up on him by the new problems of the new age.

There are three clearly marked feature of the age in which we live. They are the scientific and technological revolution, the liberation of dependent countries in Asia and Africa and the growing unity of the world: We should read books which trace the history of the above mentioned three moments. The intellectual wealth of all mankind is at our disposal, we should break the barriers of language. Books build bridge between cultures, that is they bring them together. They promote understanding and love and remove suspicion, fear and hatred.

Great books come to our help when our values are at the discount many of us are mere shadows of human beings. We are the victims of contradictory impulses, we are a bundle of fear suspicion, greed, jealousy as well as kindliness and goodwill. For creating normal harmonious human society the former instincts should be curbed and the latter kindled, we must guard against corrupting the minds of our people with trivialities. A general spiritual awakening is essential.

As the job market softens somewhat, workers may be losing some of the leverage they gained when the market was tighter. The rate at which workers voluntarily quit their jobs has fallen sharply in recent months—though it edged up in May—and is only modestly above where it was before the pandemic disrupted the U.S. labor market. When workers quit jobs, it reflects their confidence that they can find another, better job. A report indicated that hourly earnings for hotel and restaurant workers rose 28 percent from the end of 2020 to the end of 2022, which was faster than the rates of both inflation and overall wage growth. But now, after surging in late 2021 and early 2022, growth for low-wage workers has slowed, and fewer workers in the hospitality industry are separating from their jobs now compared with the same period last year.

This slowing wage growth could be seen as a sign that workers are losing ground. But another possible reason that wage growth has slowed is that many workers’ base pay has gone up compared with a couple of years ago. Employers are giving raises off a wage rate that has risen a lot since the spring of 2021. The Fed will be happy to see the job market cooling off, so we might see fewer interest-rate hikes in the months to come: Reduced competition for workers is going to reduce wage growth, which is—in the Fed’s view—going to put less pressure on employers to raise prices, so that should bring inflation down.

Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below

After a bitter referendum campaign, the United Kingdom has voted for Brexit, making the decision to leave the European Union. This is the first time that the E.U. has lost a member and will have dramatic consequences for European politics. Although the United Kingdom has sometimes been an uncomfortable member of the E.U., it has played a crucial role, for example in helping to create a shared market across Europe and in pushing for the enlargement of the E.U. to include Eastern European countries after the end of the Cold War. Now, the U.K. has decided to leave.

The first loser from Brexit is the man who decided to hold a referendum in the first place: British Prime Minister David Cameron. After winning moderate concessions from the E.U., he pressed for a “yes” vote. His failure to secure one has forced him to resign. Cameron’s Conservative Party has been badly split on E.U. questions for the last two decades, and one of his major rivals, former London mayor Boris Johnson, belatedly started to advocate Brexit, in what was widely perceived as an effort to challenge Cameron and his chosen successor. The Conservative Party is about to be plunged into a bitter leadership fight.

However, the Conservatives’ main political rival, the Labour Party, is unlikely to do much better. Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of Labour, was an ineffective and not especially enthusiastic campaigner for the “remain” side. Labour’s traditional strongholds in the north of England voted heavily in favor of leaving. Corbyn too has many enemies in his own party, some of whom will very likely use this to try to unseat him.
The U.K. consists of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. England and Wales voted decisively in favor of leaving the European Union. Scotland, and to a lesser extent Northern Ireland, wanted to stay. This split may exacerbate existing fault lines in British politics. Scotland held a failed referendum on independence a couple of years ago; some voices in the Scottish independence movement are already pushing for a new referendum that might allow Scotland to leave the U.K. and remain part of the E.U. Northern Ireland’s Sinn Fein party has already said that it wants to renew its push to reunite Northern Ireland with the Republic of Ireland.
