JoSAA Previous Year Cutoff

JoSAA previous year cutoff refers to the opening and closing ranks published by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority after each round of counselling. The opening rank is the best rank that received a seat in a particular institute, branch, and category combination; the closing rank is the last rank allotted. All IIT cutoffs are based on JEE Advanced All India Ranks (AIR), while NIT, IIIT, and GFTI cutoffs are based on JEE Main Common Rank List (CRL).

For 2026 aspirants, previous year cutoff data is the single most reliable reference for building a realistic JoSAA choice list. The official JoSAA portal, josaa.nic.in, publishes cutoffs for all rounds. Data for years 2023, 2024, and 2025 is particularly useful for trend analysis.

Key things to understand before reading cutoff tables:

Final round closing rank is the safe benchmark. Round 1 closing ranks are much tighter because fewer candidates are in the pool. The final round (up to round 6) shows the realistic range.

Quota matters for NITs. NITs reserve 50% of seats for Home State (HS) candidates and 50% for Other State (OS). HS closing ranks are usually more relaxed than OS for the same branch.

Gender quota. Female supernumerary seats have significantly higher closing ranks than Gender-Neutral seats, giving female candidates a meaningful advantage at all IITs.

Cutoffs shift each year. Difficulty of the paper, number of qualifying candidates, seat matrix changes, and candidate preference trends all affect cutoffs. A 5 to 10% safety cushion over the previous year's final round closing rank is advisable.

Use the Cracku JEE Mains College Predictor alongside this data to shortlist realistic options based on your exact rank and category.

JoSAA Previous Year Cutoff for IITs

IIT admissions through JoSAA are based on JEE Advanced AIR. In JoSAA 2025, there were six rounds for IIT seat allotment, with Round 6 being the final allotment round. The table below shows the JoSAA 2025 and 2024 final round opening and closing ranks for BTech Computer Science Engineering in the Open Gender-Neutral category across all 23 IITs. Students can refer to this IIT cutoff data to understand the admission trends and rank requirements for CSE at different IITs.

Key observations from the IIT cutoff data:

IIT Bombay maintained the tightest CSE cutoff at closing rank 66 in 2025, unchanged in competitiveness from 2024 (68). It has consistently ranked as the top choice for JEE Advanced toppers.

IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Kharagpur are all closing within AIR 400 for CSE in the open category.

IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and IIT Jodhpur saw tighter cutoffs in 2025 compared to 2024, reflecting increased demand.

Newer IITs (Bhilai, Dharwad, Jammu, Goa) closed CSE above AIR 6,000, showing more accessible entry points for candidates in the mid-rank range.

IIT BHU, IIT Guwahati, and IIT Hyderabad saw slightly relaxed cutoffs in 2025, indicating reduced competition for those seats.

Note: All ranks are JEE Main CRL for CSE, Open/General Category, Other State (OS) Quota, Final Round. Home State quota closing ranks are typically more relaxed. For complete data across all branches, categories, and quota types, refer josaa.nic.in.

Key observations from the NIT cutoff data:

NIT Tiruchirappalli (NIT Trichy) has the tightest CSE cutoff among all NITs, closing near CRL 1,450 in 2025 (OS, Open). It requires approximately 99.5 to 99.7 percentile in JEE Main.

NIT Karnataka Surathkal and NIT Warangal are close second and third, both closing under CRL 2,500 in the open OS quota in 2025.

NIT Calicut, NIT Rourkela, and MNIT Jaipur form a strong second tier, typically closing between CRL 3,000 and 5,500 for CSE.

Home State quota advantage is significant. NIT Warangal, for instance, admitted home state candidates for CSE at substantially higher CRL ranks in 2025 than the OS quota.

The closing rank gap between Round 1 and Round 6 was significant for top NITs in 2025, meaning candidates should not give up on a target NIT based solely on Round 1 data.

        Key observations:

IIIT Allahabad (IT branch) and IIITM Gwalior (Integrated programme) are among the most competitive IIITs under JoSAA, closing near CRL 10,000 in 2025.

IIIT Delhi is highly sought after for CSE, closing near CRL 8,000 in 2025 for the open category.

IIIT Lucknow and other newer IIITs offer CSE admission at CRL above 10,000, making them viable for candidates in the 98 to 99 percentile range.

GFTIs such as IIEST Shibpur offer competitive programmes and typically see CSE cutoffs in the range of CRL 10,000 to 20,000 depending on branch and category.

JoSAA Previous Year Category Wise Cutoff

JoSAA cutoffs differ across six reservation categories: Open (General), EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD. The table below illustrates category-wise opening and closing ranks for IIT Bombay BTech CSE across 2025 and 2024, giving a clear picture of how ranks vary by category.

Note: OBC-NCL, EWS, SC, ST, and PwD ranks are the respective category ranks (not CRL). Candidates must check their category rank on their JEE Advanced scorecard, not their CRL, when comparing against reserved category cutoffs.

          Key points on category-wise cutoffs:

OBC-NCL closing rank for IIT Bombay CSE in 2025 was 54 (JEE Advanced OBC-NCL rank), which corresponds to a much higher CRL.

SC and ST categories see significantly lower closing ranks in both absolute JEE Advanced rank terms and proportionally, reflecting reservation policy.

Female supernumerary seats at IITs operate over and above the regular seat matrix. The closing rank for open female-only seats at IIT Bombay CSE was around rank 369 in JEE Advanced 2025, substantially more relaxed than the gender-neutral cutoff of 66.

EWS category was introduced in 2019 and provides 10% reservation in GN seats. EWS closing ranks are between OBC-NCL and Open category ranks at most institutes.

For NITs and IIITs, category-wise closing ranks follow a similar pattern but are based on JEE Main category ranks. Always cross-check category rank (not CRL) against the relevant reserved category cutoff row on josaa.nic.in.

JoSAA Previous Year Cutoff Round Wise Analysis

Cutoffs change with each round of JoSAA counselling. Round 1 allotments show the most competitive ranks because candidates who have secured seats in earlier rounds vacate seats in subsequent rounds when they upgrade. The table below illustrates the round-wise movement for IIT Bombay CSE (Open GN) and NIT Trichy CSE (Open, OS) in JoSAA 2025.

IIT Bombay CSE (Open GN) showed minimal movement across rounds in 2025 because demand is extremely tight. In contrast, mid-tier IITs and top NITs showed 8 to 20% rank relaxation from Round 1 to the final round. Source: josaa.nic.in round-wise allotment data, JoSAA 2025.

            What round-wise analysis tells you:

Never reject a choice because Round 1 closing rank is out of reach. For NIT Trichy CSE (OS, Open), Round 1 closed near 1,100 in 2025, but the final round closed near 1,450 - meaning 350 more ranks were accommodated by the final round.

Top IIT CSE seats barely move between rounds. IIT Bombay CSE closed at 66 in Round 1 and remained at 66 in Round 6. There is no meaningful round-wise relaxation for the top seats at elite IITs.

Round 6 (for NITs) consistently shows the widest closing rank. In 2025, the Round 1 to Round 6 gap was significant for top NITs. This is your true safe rank benchmark for that branch and category.

Float and Slide options contribute to round-wise movement. Candidates who Float or Slide in earlier rounds free up lower-preference seats, allowing candidates with slightly lower ranks to receive upgrades.

Key trend observations for JoSAA 2026 planning:

IIT Bombay CSE closing rank (Open GN) has remained in the 60 to 70 AIR range across 2023 to 2025, reflecting extremely stable demand at the very top.

IIT Delhi and IIT Madras CSE have seen a slight upward trend in closing ranks, indicating marginally higher competition year on year.

NIT Trichy and NIT Surathkal CSE (OS, Open) show a consistent tightening trend from 2023 to 2025, reflecting growing preference for top NITs as an alternative to newer IITs.

NIT Warangal CSE has seen an upward trend in closing ranks from 2023 to 2025, driven by increased JEE Main aspirant numbers and growing institute reputation.

For 2026 planning, add a 5 to 10% safety buffer on the 2025 final round closing rank. For very competitive branches at top institutes, the rank may tighten further; for mid-tier or newer institutes, slight relaxation is possible if seat matrices are expanded.

All official historical cutoff data is available on josaa.nic.in under the Seat Allotment Result section. Candidates can filter by year, round, institute type, institute name, academic programme, quota, and seat type to access complete round-by-round data for any combination.

Plan your JoSAA 2026 choice list early and strengthen your admission chances by practising with JEE Questions, which provide extensive JEE Main and JEE Advanced problems, previous year questions, and exam-level practice to help you target your preferred colleges and branches.

                JoSAA Previous Year Cutoff: Conclusion

Studying JoSAA previous year cutoff trends is critical for JEE Main and Advanced aspirants planning 2026 counselling. Historical IIT, NIT, IIIT, and GFTI data, including opening and closing ranks, help candidates understand branch competitiveness and expected admission thresholds. Category-wise ranks, female supernumerary seats, and home state vs other state quotas should be carefully considered while preparing a safe choice list.

Round-wise cutoff movement reveals the impact of float, slide, and withdrawal options, enabling aspirants to optimise seat selection strategically. By analysing previous trends and applying a safety buffer of 5–10%, candidates can target colleges realistically. Using tools like Cracku JEE Questions alongside this data allows aspirants to strengthen their preparation and maximize chances of admission to their preferred institutes and branches.
