JoSAA Opening and Closing Ranks 2026
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) released the Round 1 Opening and Closing Ranks (OR-CR) on June 13, 2026. The data covers all 138 participating institutes and is available on the official portal josaa.nic.in. This data is essential for candidates evaluating their upgrade probability and deciding between Freeze, Float, or Slide options in the upcoming rounds.
OR (Opening Rank): The rank of the highest-ranked candidate who received a seat offer in a given institute-branch-category-quota combination. CR (Closing Rank): The last rank at which a seat was filled. Your rank must be numerically lower than or equal to the CR to be eligible — this means your AIR or CRL for Open category seats, or your Category Rank for reserved category seats (EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD).
Candidates with Round 1 seat offers must pay the fee and upload documents by June 26, 2026. JoSAA 2026 runs for 5 rounds total for both the IIT system and the NIT+ system. Round 5 (released July 16, 2026) is the final allocation round for IITs, IISc, and the NIT+ system under JoSAA. There is no Round 6 this year. The NIT+ system transitions directly to CSAB Special Rounds after Round 5 concludes, with Partial Admission Fee payment running July 22 to 24, 2026.

NIT Opening and Closing Rank 2026

HS closing ranks are typically 10,000 to 30,000 ranks more relaxed than OS for the same branch. Always check both quotas before finalising your choice list.

How to Use JoSAA OR-CR Data to Strategy Your Next Rounds
The OR-CR data is used to assess your probability of admission. As higher-ranked candidates upgrade their seats in successive rounds, closing ranks typically move upward by 8 to 15 percent from Round 1 to the final round for top NITs, and 10 to 20 percent for newer IITs.
- Understand that your choices are now locked: Registration and choice filling for JoSAA 2026 permanently closed on June 11, 2026. You cannot alter your preference list for Rounds 2 through 5. Instead, use this Round 1 data to gauge how close you are to your next preferred choice above your currently allotted seat.
- Apply all filters carefully: Use the official portal to filter by institute type, category, gender pool (Gender-Neutral or Female-Only), and quota (HS, OS, or AI). All data in this article represents Open, Gender-Neutral seats.
- Check both HS and OS quota for every NIT: If a branch is out of reach under the OS quota, you may qualify under the HS quota in your home state NIT. The difference can be 10,000 or more ranks.
- Understand your locked preference order: Choice filling closed on June 11, 2026. Your preference list is now permanently locked and cannot be added to, removed from, or reordered. Focus entirely on using Float or Slide to navigate toward your highest available locked preference across remaining rounds.
- Use Float or Slide, not Withdraw: If you hold a Round 1 seat and want a better option, select Float (upgrade to any higher-preference seat across institutes) or Slide (upgrade within the same college). Withdrawal exits you from all future rounds entirely.
JoSAA Opening and Closing Ranks 2026: Conclusion
The JoSAA Opening and Closing Ranks 2026 help candidates understand the level of competition for different IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. Students must compare their JEE Main or JEE Advanced rank with the correct institute, programme, category, gender pool and quota. Open-category ranks are based on CRL, while reserved-category cutoffs use the respective category rank lists.
Candidates should use the JoSAA OR-CR 2026 data to evaluate their chances of an upgrade and make informed decisions between Freeze, Float and Slide. Since submitted choices cannot be changed after choice filling closes, students should focus on their locked preference order and follow all fee-payment, document-upload and query-response deadlines carefully.
