JEE Main 2027 Tie-Breaking Rules
Among 15 lakh JEE Mains aspirants, getting a common score is quite common. But how will the ranks be announced? Does NTA have any rules to deal with students with the same score? If yes, what are they? NTA first compares the subject-wise JEE Main scores of the students who acquired the same total overall marks. Maths gets first priority; if you scored more in Mathematics than the other person, you will be ranked higher. Later, Physics and Chemistry scores are checked. Therefore, you must know the tie-breaking rules to understand the JEE scoring pattern.
Why Are Tie-Breaking Rules Used in JEE Main 2027?
Tie-breaking rules are used because multiple candidates can obtain the same Total NTA Score. This becomes particularly important when candidates across different JEE Main shifts or sessions have equal percentile scores.
The JEE Main 2027 merit list is prepared after converting the raw scores in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry into NTA Scores. The NTA Scores from all shifts of both sessions are then considered for the overall merit.
The percentile scores are calculated up to 7 decimal places. This reduces the bunching of candidates at the same score and helps minimise the number of ties.
Candidates should therefore not assume that the same total score automatically means the same rank. NTA follows a fixed sequence of tie-breaking criteria before assigning ranks.
JEE Main 2027 Tie-Breaking Rules for Paper 1
JEE Main 2027 notification for the January session is now out. Fill the form now, focus on your preparation, and know the additional info like tie-breaking rules today.
For Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech), the tie-breaking process starts with subject-wise NTA Scores. If two candidates have the same Total NTA Score, their Mathematics NTA Score is compared first.
Tie-Breaking Criterion |
Higher NTA Score in Mathematics |
Higher NTA Score in Physics |
Higher NTA Score in Chemistry |
Lower proportion of attempted incorrect answers to correct answers across all subjects |
Lower proportion of attempted incorrect answers to correct answers in Mathematics |
Lower proportion of attempted incorrect answers to correct answers in Physics |
Lower proportion of attempted incorrect answers to correct answers in Chemistry |
Same rank if the tie still continues |
For example, if two candidates have the same Total NTA Score but one has a higher Mathematics NTA Score, the tie is resolved immediately. The remaining criteria are not required.

Subject-Wise Priority in JEE Main 2027 Tie-Breaking
Mathematics has the highest subject-wise priority in the Paper 1 tie-breaking process. Physics is considered next, followed by Chemistry. You can now use the JEE chapter-wise PYQs to strengthen your problem-solving skills.
Order | Subject | What is Compared? |
1 | Mathematics | NTA Score |
2 | Physics | NTA Score |
3 | Chemistry | NTA Score |
Consider two candidates with the following Total NTA Scores:
Candidate | Total NTA Score | Maths NTA Score | Physics NTA Score | Chemistry NTA Score |
A | 98.5000000 | 99.2000000 | 97.8000000 | 96.9000000 |
B | 98.5000000 | 98.9000000 | 99.1000000 | 97.5000000 |
Candidate A gets priority because the Mathematics NTA Score is higher. The higher Physics or Chemistry score of Candidate B does not matter once the tie is resolved at the first criterion.
This makes subject-wise performance important even when the Total NTA Score is identical.

JEE Main 2027 Tie-Breaking Rules Based on Incorrect and Correct Answers
If candidates remain tied after comparing Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry NTA Scores, NTA considers their accuracy.
The first accuracy-based criterion compares the proportion of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers across all subjects. A candidate with the lower proportion receives priority.
If the tie remains, the same comparison is made separately in this order:
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
For example, suppose two candidates have identical Total, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry NTA Scores.
Candidate A has a lower proportion of incorrect answers compared with correct answers across all three subjects. Candidate A will receive priority.
This is why accuracy matters beyond simply attempting a larger number of JEE questions. JEE aspirants preparing with JEE Mains mock test can track both marks and accuracy to understand how negative marking may affect their performance.
The marking scheme itself awards +4 for a correct answer and -1 for an incorrect answer in both MCQs and numerical-value questions. An unanswered question carries no mark.
What Happens If the Tie Continues After All Tie-Breaking Rules?
If the tie continues after all the prescribed criteria have been applied, the candidates are assigned the same rank.
There is no additional criterion mentioned for Paper 1 after the Chemistry-based accuracy comparison.
The sequence can therefore be remembered as:
Mathematics NTA Score → Physics NTA Score → Chemistry NTA Score → Overall accuracy ratio → Mathematics accuracy → Physics accuracy → Chemistry accuracy → Same rank
Candidates do not need to calculate their own final rank using this sequence. NTA applies the official criteria while preparing the merit list.
The same framework also means that candidates should check the official information after the JEE Main form-filling process is completed, especially when NTA releases updated examination documents.
How Are Ranks Determined When Candidates Have the Same NTA Score?
NTA first converts raw marks into NTA Scores. Since JEE Main is conducted in multiple shifts, this process allows scores from different shifts to be considered together.
The overall merit is then prepared by merging the NTA Scores of candidates from all shifts of both sessions.
Rank Determination Process |
Raw marks are obtained from the examination |
Subject-wise and Total NTA Scores are calculated |
NTA Scores from all shifts are merged |
Candidates with equal Total NTA Scores are compared using tie-breaking rules |
Subject-wise NTA Scores are checked |
Accuracy-based criteria are checked if required |
Same rank is assigned if the tie remains |
This is different from simply arranging candidates according to their raw marks. NTA Scores and the prescribed tie-breaking sequence determine the final order.

JEE Main 2027 Tie-Breaking Rules for Candidates Appearing in Both Sessions
Candidates appearing in both JEE Main sessions are considered according to the NTA's applicable merit and score rules. The overall merit is prepared by merging the NTA Scores of candidates from all shifts of both sessions.
So you should therefore keep your performance consistent across sessions rather than relying only on one examination attempt. Along with this, follow the JEE Mains session 1 exam dates so that preparation and revision can be organised accordingly.
Mathematics gets the priority in Paper 1, followed by Physics and Chemistry. If the subject-wise scores also remain equal, NTA checks the proportion of incorrect and correct answers.
For candidates preparing for JEE Main 2027, score well, maintain accuracy and avoid unnecessary attempts. A higher subject-wise NTA Score can resolve a tie before the accuracy criteria are even considered.
JEE Main 2027 Tie-Breaking Rules: Conclusion
Understanding the JEE Main 2027 tie-breaking rules helps candidates see why equal Total NTA Scores may lead to different ranks. For Paper 1, Mathematics receives first priority, followed by Physics and Chemistry. If these scores are also equal, the incorrect-to-correct answer ratios are compared. Candidates receive the same rank only when all prescribed criteria fail to resolve the tie.
As you prepare for JEE Main 2027, focus on improving performance across all three subjects while reducing avoidable mistakes. Use JEE Main mock tests and chapter-wise previous year questions to review weak areas and practise accurate attempts. Check the official NTA information bulletin for the applicable ranking rules and any updates before the examination.
