How the IIM Final Selection Process Works in 2026
Landing a seat at an IIM entails a lot more than simply scoring a high percentile in the CAT.
Lets see all the steps of this multi-level selection process of IIMs in 2026:
Step 1: Pass the CAT Exam: Firstly, the aspirants have to take the CAT examination and meet the minimum overall as well as sectional percentile requirements of the respective IIM institutions.
Step 2: Eligible Candidates are Shortlisted for Further Rounds. Step 3: Take Part in the PI/WAT: Only the ones who have been shortlisted will be called for the personal interview (PI), which is the next step in many institutions. Step 4: Check the Candidate Profile: In this step, the overall profile of the candidate will be judged by the institution, in which the aspects such as academic consistency, quality, and duration of work experience, keeping extracurricular activities, and other achievements, along with diversity factors, if applicable, are considered.
Step 5: Calculating the Composite Score: Every IIM develops a composite score by giving different weights to the different parameters, such as performance in CAT, PI performance, WAT performance (if applicable), academics, work experience, points from diversity, etc.
Step 6: Drafting the Final Merit List: Based on the composite scores, the candidates are ranked. Also, the final admission offers are according to the institute's merit list and seat availability.
