How to Prepare for IIM GDPI: Strategy, Questions & Expert Tips

How to Prepare for IIM GDPI?

It is an excellent accomplishment to receive an interview invitation from an Indian Institute of Management (IIM); however, converting this opportunity into admission will require adequate preparation for the group discussion and personal interview (GDPI) section of the admissions process. Registered applicants may find that they have received strong marks on their CAT (Common Admission Test), but many applicants do not pass through this stage because they do not completely understand how to answer all the different types of questions that IIM colleges will ask during the GDPI phase. The GDPI process is meant to evaluate your knowledge, personality, communication abilities, potential for leading others, and understanding of your goals.

Note: The best way to know about the interview questions is by reading the real interview transcripts. Click on the button below to read the interviews from your field.

What Is GDPI in IIM Selection Process?

The GDPI (Group Discussion and Personal Interview) stage for IIM admissions is the final and most important part of the IIM selection process. The GD stage may not be part of every IIM's selection process, as some IIMs will replace the GD stage with a Written Ability Test (WAT). The mandatory stage of the GDPI is the Personal Interview and every IIM requires that every candidate go through a Personal Interview.

Some of the goals that the GDPI stage meets are as follows:

    • To assess how well candidates can communicate through words and put ideas into words.
    • To assess the leadership, team-building and listening abilities of candidates.
    • To evaluate each candidate's analytical thinking and ability for decision-making.
    • To have a greater understanding of the personality of the candidate, their values and ethics.
    • To gauge candidates' ability to express themselves academically and their level of professional exposure.

The weight of your overall performance in GDPI will factor heavily into how your final merit list is compiled (along with your CAT Score, academic history, work experience and diversity factors).

You can greatly improve your chances of converting an IIM call through preparation for the top IIM GDPI interview questions, developing a deeper understanding of your professional/academic profile, and regular practice.
