Average Rate of Reaction

Rarely Tested

$$R_{\text{avg}} = -\frac{\Delta[\text{Reactant}]}{a \cdot \Delta t} = +\frac{\Delta[\text{Product}]}{b \cdot \Delta t}$$

Concept: Represents the change in molar concentration of reactants or products divided by the corresponding time interval, adjusted for their stoichiometric coefficients.

Notation:

  • $$R_{\text{avg}}$$ = Average rate of reaction;
  • $$\Delta[\text{Reactant}]$$ = Change in reactant concentration;
  • $$\Delta[\text{Product}]$$ = Change in product concentration;
  • $$\Delta t$$ = Time interval;
  • $$a, b$$ = Stoichiometric coefficients of reactant and product.
