Hello Team, Frequently i am facing issue with RC questions like "Which of the following is/are true". Even if these are very straight forward question , i am not able to retain information to answer properly. There is always one sentence that is missing. How can i improve on this?

Hi Bhaskar. One of the popular misconceptions is that inference based questions are always difficult and fact-based questions are always on the easier side. This is far from the truth, as the fact-based options are twisted such that each of them appears correct but only one is: E.g. The passage mentions that the complex brain of an organism allows it to be a thriving member of society: This means that by the virtue of its complex brain, the organism can better contribute to society. The Option: The complex brain of the organism allows it to be a member of society: This option implies that if the organism's brain was not complex, it would be shunned from society, which is a distortion. It could be possible that even an organism with a simple brain is a part of society, but not as thriving as one who has a complex brain. I hope you see how omitting a single word changes the entire meaning. The way forward: 1. Read carefully. If you spend 1 minute more on the question carefully checking for such distortions, it is worth it, as the investment of 1 minute can make a difference of 4 marks: -1 saved from a silly mistake and 3 marks gained from a correct answer. 2. Active reading: Sometimes we are unable to find where in the passage the option was mentioned. In the time pressure, we tend to be more confounded, and are unable to catch the line even if it is in front of us. If you paraphrase each paragraph as Sayali Ma'am advises, you can easily refer to your notes to see where in the passage you could find the answer. This could go a long way in increasing your score in other types of questions too. Try practising RCs from the study room and daily target, and apply these techniques. There is still time for you to become proficient in this section, and increase your score considerably. All the best.

My VARC scores are low for the past two weeks. What should I do to improve?

Hi The only thing you should follow to improve VARC scores is to analyze the mocks very well and at the same time continue your regular reading . Try to find patterns in the mistakes which you are committing frequently and then work upon them in coming days before appearing for next mock . Don't take a lot of pressure as sometimes because of pressure and fear we underperform in exam especially in VARC because it is the first section of the exam . Take it as an exam, try to extract as much as you can from each mock or sectional , also attempt past year CAT papers from now.

Sir, In dashcat 5, Q67 & Q50, in Q67 i am making two equations satisfying the conditions but not the given answer,,,also in Q50, using area of traingle = (abc/4R) i am getting a diff value than answer given...pls check....my solution and the given solution...

Hi For Question 50 even if you use abc/4A, answer should come same In triangle MCD , CD=12 MC = MD , now MC can be calculated using cosine rule cos 150 = (MB^2+BC^2-MC^2)/2MB.BC So MC^2 = 288+144rt3 Now area of triangle is 1/2 *2* (12+6rt3) (height of equi triangle +side of square will be the height of triangle MCD) NOW R = 12 *MC^2/4area = 12 (288+144rt3)/4*0.5*12*(12+6rt3) = 288+144rt3/24+12rt3 so R =12cm. And for Q67 can you please post your solution so that I can check if you are making any mistake .

Hello, in VARC I can solve only 3 RCs out of 4 whereas I want to attempt all 4 but despite trying hard, I am not able to reach to that speed. What should I do? I cannot speed read or skim, my accuracy succumbs then. Any solution? Quite concerned about this coz I can scale up my by attempting one more RC.

Hi Nikita. You need to identify where you are losing time during mocks. If you are spending too much time on certain questions, you need to identify and practise those types. Generally, students spend a lot of time reading the passage or solving a particular kind of question. The time on passage can be reduced if you practice concentrated reading, as time is wasted reading the same paragraph twice or thrice when one is not paying full attention. To reduce time on solving questions, try to eliminate 2-3 options and then starts a deep analysis of options. There would be at least 2 options that are distorted, and hence a deep analysis of only the other two would save you some time. Another strategy could be that you leave the VA part for the last if you do not strongly prefer doing it first. The reason is that VAs are independent questions. If you have 3 minutes on a clock, you can solve 2-3 VA questions. But with 3 minutes on a clock, getting questions right in a passage would be very difficult, especially when the questions are inference/main idea based. In the end, it all comes down to practice. The more you will read, the better your speed will be in the exam. The more you practise, the better you will be at solving questions. And the more mocks you give, the better you will be at managing time. Be confident and practise hard. All the best.
