In India, a Member of Parliament (MP) can lose their seat if they are absent from all parliamentary sessions for 60 consecutive days without the House's permission. This rule ensures that MPs actively participate in legislative proceedings and represent their constituents effectively.

The Speaker or Chairman can declare the seat vacant if an MP meets the above criteria. The period for which the house is adjourned or prorogued is not counted when calculating the 60 days. When an MP is absent from the house for a long period, they usually submit a leave application.
