Solution

Let total votes polled be V.
The winner got 65% votes and won by margin of 12000 votes. Means the rival got 35% votes.
hence, 0.65V - 0.35V = 12000 which gives us V = 12000/0.3 = 40,000 i.e. 0.4 lakh
