Question 77

What is the Number of candidates who had applied if the ratio of selected to unselected was 14 : 25. If 35 less had applied and 10 less selected, the ratio of selected to unselected would have been 3 : 5?

Solution

Let number of selected candidates be 14x
Now number of unselected candidates will be : 25x
Now total applied = 39x ...(1)
Now if 35 less applied
we get applied = 39x-35         (2)
If 10 less got selected then we get selected as 14x-10
Now therefore unselected = 25x-25
Now by condition :
14x-10 : 25x-25 =3:5
solving we get 70x-50 = 75x-75
we get 5x=25
x=5
So candidates applied = 39x = 195
