Let's assume the total marks of the examination is 100y.

A student has to obtain a minimum of 50% marks in an examination to pass. He scored 40% and failed by 30 marks.

100y of 50% = 100y of 40% + 30

50y = 40y + 30

10y = 30

y = 3

Total marks of the examination = 100y

= $$100\times3$$

= 300
