Question 67

A train covers 60 km at a uniform speed. If the speed had been 8 km/h more, it would have taken 10 hours less for the same journey. Whatis the speed ofthe train (in km/h)?

Solution

Let speed be x km/h

Therefore Time taken to complete the whole journey = $$\frac{60}{x}$$ hour.

By the problem,

$$\frac{60}{x+8}$$ = $$\frac{60}{x}$$ -10

=> $${x}^2 +8x -48=0$$

=> we get x = 4, -12. Since speed can be positive only, speed =4
