Question 64

If x : y = 4 : 5, then (3x + y) : (5x + 3y) =

Solution

$$x : y = 4 : 5$$

Let $$x = 4z$$ and $$y = 5z$$

Substituting these values in expression : $$\frac{3x + y}{5x + 3y}$$

= $$\frac{3 (4z) + 5z}{5 (4z) + 3 (5z)}$$

= $$\frac{12z + 5z}{20z + 15z} = \frac{17 z}{35 z}$$

= $$\frac{17}{35} = 17 : 35$$
