Solution

Let's assume the speed of boat in still water and the speed of stream are 'B' and 'C' respectively.

the boat goes 12 km/h along the stream and 4 km/h against the stream.

B+C = 12 Eq.(i)

B-C = 4 Eq.(ii)

Add Eq.(i) and Eq.(ii).

B+C+B-C = 12+4

2B = 16

speed of a boat in still water = B = 8 km/h
