Question 59

Study the given table and answer the question that follows.
The table below shows the percentage distribution of students from five different colleges in various disciplines.

Students from the discipline of mathematics in colleges P and R taken together is what percentage of the total number of students in colleges P and R taken together? [Give your answer correct to one decimal place.]

Solution

Students from the discipline of mathematics in colleges P and R taken together = 8000 of 30% + 15000 of 40%

= $$8000\times\frac{30}{100}+15000\times\frac{40}{100}$$

= 2400+6000

= 8400    Eq.(i)

total number of students in colleges P and R taken together = 8000+15000

= 23000    Eq.(ii)

percentage = $$\frac{Eq.(i)}{Eq.(ii)}\times100$$

= $$\frac{8400}{23000}\times100$$

= $$\frac{840}{23}$$

= 36.5% (approx.)
