Question 58

The ratio of two numbers is 2 : 1. If each number is increased by 5, then the new ratio becomes 3 : 2. What is the sum of the numbers?

Solution

The ratio of two numbers is 2 : 1.

Let's assume the two numbers are 2y and y.

If each number is increased by 5, then the new ratio becomes 3 : 2.

$$\frac{2y+5}{y+5}\ =\ \frac{3}{2}$$

$$4y+10\ =\ 3y+15$$

4y-3y = 15-10

y = 5

Sum of the numbers = 2y+y

= 3y

= $$3\times5$$

= 15
