X is twice as good as workman as Y. Together, they finish the work in 18 days. In how many days can it be done by each separately?

Solution

Let the efficiency of Y = 1 unit per day.
Then, The efficiency of X = 2 units per day.
Total efficiency of A and Y together = 3 units per day.
Then, in 18 days, X and Y can do 18*3 = 54 units of work.
Hence, Total work = 54 units.
X can do the work individually in $$\dfrac{54}{2} = 27$$ days

Y can do the work individually in $$\dfrac{54}{1} = 54$$ days.
